They are commonly associated mainly with social media posts. However, tags have also been used on websites for years. They can be included in an article or any other post. Why are tags added to a website? What are the rules for adding them and finally - what are tags? Read the article below to find out the answers to these questions.
Tags - what are they and what function do they serve on a website?
In a nutshell, these are tags that group content together. They can be single words or longer phrases, specifying the topics of entries or parts of entries. In fact, it is better if the tag only refers to a section of an article or other content, but we discuss this issue in more detail later in the text.
So a tag is a designation in the form of #keyword. When using html tags, we include links to subpages underneath them. Each tag should have a subpage where all the content containing it is available. These can be links to specific articles, but also to categories or products. On the technical side, creating tags is straightforward. Both WordPress and most other CMSs support them.
We have already explained what tags are. What remains to be answered is why they are used. Well, tags are assigned 2 main tasks:
- organising content on the website,
- optimisation of the website for key phrases.
Adding tags helps to organise content so that users can easily get to the entry, product or category they are looking for. In certain situations, tags can be used for SEO, but such an action must necessarily be implemented under the guidance of a professional. Otherwise, it is very easy to cannibalise content and cause a number of problems hooking SEO.
How do you use tags effectively on a page?
What you also need to know about tags is that it is crucial to use them correctly. Above all, remember to define the tags and their subsections even before you prepare the article. We recommend defining the tags and then assigning them to individual entries.
This will help avoid the problem of repeating the same content on the entry sub-page and the tag sub-page. Why this is important, you will learn in the next paragraph. In the meantime, let's add that the following two things need to be taken care of in order for the tags on the page to ensure success:
- categories should be thoughtfully designed to make it realistically easier to navigate the site. In other words, articles and other posts on the tag sub-page should be thematically related to them.
- The subpage tag should be technically and content-wise refined in order to be positively evaluated by Google, which will result in a higher position in search results.
Tags - what mistakes should you avoid when using them on your website?
Incorrect tag management can be counterproductive. The threat is content cannibalisation, i.e. competition between two subpages of the same website for positions on the same phrases. If the tag is the same as the main phrase of the entry, Google does not know which subpage to position for it - the one with the entry or the tag's subpage.
This results in drops in visibility for both sub-pages. And after all, that's not what any site administrator wants, is it?
