What are storage areas? Zoning is a way of streamlining work and carrying out individual processes more efficiently. Logistics in the processing of e-commerce orders is key to good customer service. What are warehouse zones and what do you need to know about them?
Storage areas - what are their characteristics?
Storage zones should be present in every warehouse regardless of the type of orders it handles. They are characterised by the fact that each one is tailored to a specific type of activity corresponding to the different stages of fulfilment. This means that goods are stored in a different place, packed in another and picked up by the courier in yet another.
Warehouse zoning - what do you need to know?
In order to plan the zoning of a warehouse correctly, it is first necessary to analyse exactly what the work processes look like at the location in question. It is advisable to carefully map out the route taken by the goods, from the moment they are taken off the shelf, through packaging to dispatch. On this basis, it will be possible to determine the subsequent areas.
If you do not want to deal with splitting the warehouse yourself, it is worth considering using the fulfilment option. This is the option offered by InPost. This is a business-only service in which all logistics processes are handed over to specialists. First, the vendor's systems are connected to the warehouse, and then it is InPost employees who take and fulfil all orders for the vendor.
As soon as a customer places an order in the webshop, the warehouse staff is immediately notified. The picking and packing of purchases therefore happens almost immediately. Thanks to the InPost warehouses, products paid for by 20:00 reach their recipients the very next day.
Fulfillment gives the option of personalisation. Each shipment can be packaged exactly according to the retailer's instructions. This has a multitude of benefits, as it influences fast customer service and does not lose brand characteristics (e.g. special packaging, accessories, leaflets).
By handing over the fulfilment processes to an experienced company, the retailer is assured that its goods will be stored in the right conditions and shipped efficiently. He can then take care of other matters such as brand marketing or running social media profiles. The technological layouts of InPost's warehouses are perfectly planned, so the merchant does not have to worry about work not running efficiently.
What zones must be included in every warehouse?
Each storage area is a separate area of the warehouse where certain processes take place. There should be at least five such areas. These are:
- loading and unloading zone;
- receiving area;
- goods storage area;
- order picking area;
- ordering area.
The first is sometimes located inside the warehouse and sometimes outside. This is the place where warehousemen receive goods from outside, which arrive to them, e.g. on truck packs. The area also acts as an export of articles from the warehouse space. Sometimes these areas are split into two, but this depends primarily on the size of the warehouse and the amount of goods. Within it, the size of pallets and bulky articles must be taken into account.
The receiving area is where employees check the quality of the delivered goods and their quantity. They check that everything is correct and that the products are allowed to pass to the next area, the storage area. This area can look different, as each commodity requires different conditions. Some, for example, need the right storage temperature.
The order picking zone is where warehouse staff pack the products ordered by customers. They take them from the storage area, check that everything is correct and then pass them on to the last zone, which is shipping. From there, the packed and addressed orders are placed in the hands of couriers, who deliver them to consumers or collection points.
The functionality of the storage areas and the fact that they are tailored to the specific characteristics of the goods also appears to be crucial. The efficiency of work and the orderliness of the place depend on this. The better they are laid out, the more comfortable the work of all warehouse staff is.
Due to the specifics of the company in question, other areas necessary for work can be identified. It is also becoming increasingly common to find a returns area. There, employees accept parcels that have been sent back by customers. This is particularly popular with clothing retailers.
Why is the warehouse divided into zones?
The logistics of warehouse areas is key to the efficient processing of e-commerce orders. Properly planned space makes good use of the warehouse area. The fact that goods do not have to be moved across the entire hall helps to ensure safe and fast work. Zones should be arranged in such a way that the items to each successive zone take the shortest possible route. The storage area should be tidy and have the necessary distances so that every item can be reached without difficulty.
The better the warehouse is planned, the faster the work flows. One of the reasons for this is the separation of different areas. Another objective is to ensure the safety of all employees. Well-planned processes avoid collisions or other unnecessary problems in the warehouse.
The separation of zones is also intended to ensure that all equipment is properly located. Not only shelving units, but also forklifts, computers and ramps must have their place. It must be remembered that such space is not only used for storage, but also for repacking or releasing goods to other locations. It is therefore necessary to ensure that the picking of ordered products and their transfer for transport takes place in separate areas.
All of this supports orderliness, efficient operations and safe loading. Employees do not disturb each other and know their assigned place. This makes it much easier for them to adapt to their place of work, depending on which components they belong to. Arranging areas in warehouses is the key to proper operations and first-class customer service.
