The Polish Izera electric car is a project that was unveiled in 2020 and gained considerable publicity at the time. The idea behind the creation of the first Polish electric car is part of a larger government strategy that aims, among other things, to popularise electric cars among Poles. How is the work on the car going? Where will the factory be built? How much will the Izera cost? We explain in this article.
Polish electric car Izera - highlights
The company responsible for creating Izera is ElectroMobility Poland (EMP). This company was founded in 2016 and is based in Warsaw. The CEO of the company is Piotr Zaremba. It is a state-owned entity in which other state-owned companies hold shares. These include Enea, Energa, PGE and Tauron. Each of them holds 25 per cent of the EMP's shares and has contributed financially to its creation and development. PLN 5 billion will be allocated to the development of the project over the next few years.
At present, the Polish car is in the very early stages of development. The performance, equipment and even the appearance of the car may still change. It is therefore also impossible to say how much the Izera will cost. Any doubts will perhaps be resolved in two years' time. This is when the factory producing Polish electrics is due to start. It remains to be hoped that the launch of the plant will go ahead as planned.
When will production of the Polish electric car Izera start?
Production is expected to start in 2024, by which time all technical and visual aspects of the car are to be known. At that time, it will also be possible to determine the price of the Izera car.
The prototype, which can be seen in the promotional graphics, was created by Italian studio Torino Design. Tadeusz Jelec, the designer of Jaguar cars, assisted in its realisation. However, the design of the Izera may be subject to change. So far, the suppliers of the car's parts are unknown. It is only known that they will not be exclusively Polish companies.
A detailed definition of performance and equipment is essential for setting up the factory and production lines. In contrast to the parts suppliers themselves, here the EMP partners are known. They will be the Polish company Prochem and the German Dürr Systems AG.
The Polish company will be responsible for selecting contractors for the construction of the factory and organising a tender in which engineers will be selected. The German company will prepare the design of the production lines and equipment for the factory halls, where parts will be welded, assembled and painted.
Where will the Izera car be manufactured?
The EMP concern has chosen an area belonging to the State Forests as the site for the Izera factory. The wooded plot, which is a remnant of mining dumps, is to be handed over to the Jaworzno municipality. However, this has not yet happened.
Why was this site chosen? The factory was to be built in a convenient location. The area for the construction of the Izera plant in Jaworzno is close to carriage roads and a railway line. As a result, the transport of parts to the factory and the export of finished cars to customers in Poland and the rest of Europe will not require large investments for the construction of a logistics network.
A large factory also requires access to a power source of great power. A plot of land in Jaworzno can be connected to electricity relatively easily. It is also easy to develop. The flat, wooded area can easily be converted into an industrial site. Compensation for the felled trees is to be planted elsewhere.
No less important is the need to provide jobs for people in the Silesian Voivodship. In the coming years, a gradual phasing out of hard coal mining is anticipated. This in turn will create the problem of increasing unemployment. The Izera electric car factory is intended to prevent this. Ultimately, 3 thousand people are to be employed there. Another 12 000 people will be able to work in companies connected with the distribution of Izera.
Izera - price. How much will it cost?
The price of the Izera car is, for the time being, a great unknown. In fact, there are not even preliminary estimates of how much it might be. This is due to the very early stage of the Polish electric car project. So far, only mock-ups and graphics of two car models are available. These are to be a hatchback and an SUV.
How much the Izera will cost will be influenced by the choice of suppliers and the prices they offer. This is because it must be remembered that the car will not be produced entirely in Poland. Ultimately, the entire suspension, drivetrain, batteries and equipment are to come from the domestic market. In the interim, however, due to the lack of suitable factories and the technology under development, many parts will be imported from abroad.
The price of the Izera electric car will depend, among other things, on the cost of licensing the car's floor plate. So far, Toyota has been excluded from participating in the project. Behind the scenes, there is talk of negotiations with the Volkswagen Group. Not only vehicles of this brand, but also cars of the Škoda and Seat brands, which are part of the company, are currently built on floorboards of this concern.
While it is certain that the chassis will not be manufactured in Poland, this is not the case for most of the other equipment. The development of the Polish battery car will be possible through cooperation with Polish subcontractors. The price of the Izera will therefore only be known once the specific companies that will supply equipment for the vehicles have emerged.
What will the price of an Izera electric car depend on?
The production costs of the Izera alone are only part of the expenses that will have to be taken into account when planning the price of the Izera car. Equally important factors are the volume of production, the commercial success of the investment and the financial capacity of the Poles.
The Polish electric car production target is to be as high as 150,000 vehicles per year. However, this figure will not be reached immediately. As this is an investment planned for many years, such a production capacity is to be reached only at the beginning of the next decade. There is no doubt that the EMP company is keen to produce as much as possible. As with other goods, a higher volume of cars being produced will translate into lower prices.
And it is the attractive price that will influence the Izera's eventual sales success. 70% of the cars leaving the assembly line at the Jaworzno factory are to be exported abroad. However, competition is already strong. What is more, it is formed by brands recognised in the automotive world.
It will be extremely difficult to win over customers with an unknown car. The only way to fight back, at least initially, will be with an attractive price. Without it, electrification of the domestic market will also be impossible. This is progressing slowly. The reason for this is the high price of electrics.
The Izera electric car is a bold plan to rebuild the Polish automotive market and adapt it to changing times. It remains to cheer on the plans to launch production of these cars on schedule. This could give Poland a globally recognisable product and provide the population with jobs in an industry whose future looks bright.
