Marketing is an industry that has been around for centuries, as advertising products or services has actually been known since ancient times. The more new technologies develop, the wider the range of promotional activities becomes. It is therefore worth finding out about examples of good advertising over the years!
The impact of advertising on pop culture
Advertising is a deliberate action with persuasive features. It is intended to persuade recipients to use a service or purchase a promoted good. It takes a variety of forms, especially nowadays, when modern solutions offer such a wide range of possibilities for creating engaging and creative campaigns.
Advertising appears on television, radio, the internet, the press and more. This automatically integrates it into the pop culture space, as the two worlds strongly intermingle. Some products and their advertisements have contributed to certain goods, brands or logos becoming elements of pop culture. This is the case with Coca-Cola, for example.
The drink's global promotion has made it a brand in its own right. The beverage's logo can be found, for example, on clothing and is even worn by people who do not drink Coca-Cola on a daily basis. Sometimes there are also items with other inscriptions that are deliberately designed to refer to and associate with the popular product.
Famous adverts are also often characterised by actors or singers appearing in them. The appearance of celebrities and other members of pop culture is further evidence of how the two worlds are intertwined. Sometimes certain people even become the faces of particular brands and are associated with them in the eyes of the audience. On the other hand, placement often appears in films and TV series. This is why fans from all over the globe flock to the shop where Eleven from Stranger Things stole their favourite waffles.
Marketing is influential in shaping the needs and tastes of the audience. When clothes are advertised, for example, they often become fashionable and desirable. In this way, promotional activities influence the culture and how people look on the streets. After all, individual pieces of clothing are used to express oneself and one's style. When a TV spot prompts people to buy them, it has a much broader meaning than just marketing.
Interesting television commercials are usually characterised by catchy music. The songs sung in them are often catchy and become hits that gain recognition in pop culture. Sometimes certain sayings or slogans from them enter the language of the audience and become part of the culture, even when the fashion does not last long.
Ads that changed the world
One of the most memorable adverts of all time, and one that has been ingrained in the public's consciousness for many years, is the Nike brand campaign. It is a flagship example of how a catchy slogan can be used to cement a company's image with the public. It is about the famous 'Just Do It', which appeared in the media space in 1988. The slogan was intended to encourage people to push their limits, and today it is the slogan with which the entire sports brand is associated.
For another example of one of the most famous advertisements, go back to Coca-Cola. It was the marketing of this drink that cemented the figure of Santa Claus in the minds of people around the world. The bearded grey man in a red outfit appeared in the brand's materials as early as the 1930s. Every year since then, consumers in different countries have been waiting for the next appearance of the hero with the fizzy drink.
"Time for a break? Time for a KitKat!" - is a slogan that everyone knows, and was first used in a bar advertisement in 1957. It proves that a catchy slogan never loses its value. Even today, despite the passage of time, it is still used in promotional material for the sweet snack.
Such examples ensure that, as soon as the audience hears a slogan, they immediately know what the product is about. They don't even need to see the advert.
Interesting adverts - what original ideas have been memorable to audiences?
Coming up with an interesting advertisement is not as easy as it might seem. This is why companies usually set up marketing departments where experts share ideas and work together to create campaigns designed to thrill the crowds. The reception of individual campaigns is usually unpredictable and it is the public that decides what will go down in history forever.
An example of original promotional activities is the mass of actions undertaken as a result of the promotion of the Barbie film in 2023. It has been a long time since the world has seen such an extensive campaign involving a variety of large and small companies around the world. The colour pink took over company logos and marketing moves were made by some of the biggest brands in the world. The opportunity to rent the iconic doll's big house and live in it for a while will certainly remain in the minds of audiences.
Everyone is probably familiar with the elaborate Old Spice product campaign entitled The Man Your Man Could Smell Like. The deodorant adverts featured recurring actor Isaiah Mustafa, who encourages women to buy their men the cosmetics he uses. Why? So that their men can smell like him while riding a horse or travelling on a yacht.
It is also worth remembering popular Polish TV commercials. Although a long time has passed since the campaign, many viewers still remember the Heart and Mind characters in Orange's materials. Thanks to catchy music, the Bonduelle animations, in which peas and corn sing songs and thus promote tinned vegetables, have also entered the viewers' consciousness.
The most interesting outdoor advertising
Examples of television advertising can be multiplied endlessly, but outdoor campaigns are also a big part of the marketing world. Urban space offers plenty of opportunities to make history. One interesting campaign was that carried out by the KitKat brand. It involved placing benches in cities that looked as if they had been created from large candy bars. The campaign generated interest because it was both practical and striking.
Ikea, on the other hand, has decided on an interesting promotion in the US, which involves placing a huge shopping bag in popular locations. The shop is famous for its blue shopping bag, which customers around the world use not only for errands, but also for moving or other purposes. The 5-metre installation draws attention strongly and makes it impossible to miss.
The transport company Uber also seized its moment as part of the promotion of the Barbie film. In July 2023, rides were available in Warsaw in a pink Cadillac bearing the logo of both the production and the transport company. The convertible ride was hugely popular and allowed visitors to see the capital from the perspective of a vintage vehicle completely free of charge.
Interesting online advertisements
Even the most popular TV commercials do not offer viewers as many possibilities as those created for online campaigns. On the web, activities can be much more interactive, as exemplified by the promotion of the third season of the TV series Belfer.
As part of the campaign, users can launch access to the main character's smartphone in their browser and, even before watching the episodes, try to solve a related puzzle themselves. This goes hand in hand with participating in a competition with prizes.
On the web, often popular advertisements are those that are created through real-time marketing. It consists of inserting ourselves into current trends and reacting to events. At InPost, we always try to take advantage of such opportunities, which is why, some time ago, a video appeared on our profile on TikTok with a presentation of a Paczkomat® machine in the Roman Empire. This refers to a trend among platform users. Such activities are almost always met with appreciation from the audience in the comments. They also often have the opportunity to become viral.
