A company name is one of the most important things to get right at the start of a business. It needs to be catchy, associated with the brand's activities and, above all, unique. Find out how to come up with a company name that meets all the requirements! Also find out how to check that no one is already using the same one.
How do you come up with a company name - where do you start?
Wondering where to start when coming up with a company name? First of all, by writing down all the words you associate with your brand's industry. Alongside these, it's also a good idea to write down their foreign language equivalents. Try to make sure these are only single words and not phrases consisting of several words. Then write down your name next to it and, if there are more brand founders, your partners as well.
This will give you a word base from which you will be able to form the name of your own company. Mix words together, cut off their endings, combine them with others, use abbreviations. Write down any combinations, even random words from the collection. Combine words related to the company with the brand owner's name and try to create short, easy-to-remember new words.
How do I check if a company name is not already taken?
Once you have an idea for a company name, you need to make sure that no one is already using it. The primary entity where company representatives reserve the right to use a name is the Patent Office. If you are opening a business in Poland, you must use a search engine for names registered in the country. For international companies or those operating within the European Union, you should similarly check the names in the relevant registers.
The search engine should correspond to the territory in question, as a name registered in e.g. Poland is not always necessarily also registered in another country. Names may be duplicated - sometimes even in the same country there may be several companies with the same name but operating in different industries. Sometimes it happens that entrepreneurs do not reserve their names. In order to avoid duplication, it is worth searching, for example, the National Court Register or even a simple internet search engine.
Even if an entrepreneur reserves his/her brand name, this restriction is not forever. It is valid for 10 years, after which it must be renewed. It is worth remembering that the name does not immediately belong to the company as soon as the documents are submitted to the Patent Office. The officials still have to examine the application and issue a decision. Only after this can you enjoy the right to the name in question. Usually this process takes about six months.
Original company name versus a composite of existing words
It is difficult to come up with a creative company name because, even after writing down a lot of words associated with branding, they are still words that already exist. The key, therefore, is to create something new from what is already in place. Of course, not all brand names are clusters of existing words. Sometimes they are abbreviations or completely new words, but assemblies are still the most popular. They have the advantage of being able to use words that are immediately associated with the industry.
For example, if an entrepreneur is looking for a name for a sportswear shop, he has words such as sport, clothes, clothing, clothes, activity, fashion or clothes, among others. When you name your brand SPORTCIUCH, for example, everyone will immediately know what you specialise in. When combining existing words, it is worth bearing in mind that the final name should be a short company name. Simple, easy-to-remember branding will make the brand establish itself more quickly in the mind of its potential customer.
Modifying the way a word is written as a way to make a company name interesting
Catchy company names are not only about how they sound, but also about how they look. The way the word is written is very often useful in the creation of a logo. A logo, on the other hand, should be distinctive and evocative only of the particular brand it symbolises. There are many ways to modify the way words are written. For example, you can write the brand name phonetically. This means that the individual letters reflect the sound of the word. In addition, it is not necessary to use only the alphabet. Instead of using specific letters, it is advisable to use graphic symbols, e.g. if the company is involved in sports, you can put a ball in place of the "o" in the name. If it is to be the name of a beauty salon, you can use, for example, an icon of nail polish or a make-up brush instead of oblong letters. Such treatments will work especially well in a brand logo and will improve the marketing of the brand.
Reference to foreign languages as a way of naming a company
Modern company names often refer to foreign languages. This makes the brand sound more unique and is more likely to gain recognition abroad as well. Furthermore, if the brand has its own website on the internet, there is no need to worry about the domain name in the case of foreign language names. Polish characters are not allowed in web addresses. A domain name with a word in another language will not have to change, because, for example, there are no letters missing on the keyboard in English.
If you decide to use a word from a foreign language in your brand name, it is a good idea for the language to be associated with the company's activities in the relevant industry. Such associations make it easier for customers to remember the brand. For example - if you are opening a restaurant with cuisine from Italy, a word from Italian might appear in the name. If you are setting up a business selling Japanese manga, it is worth referring to a term from the language of the Cherry Blossom country.
Remember to make sure that the word definitely means what you want to convey. Some words are ambiguous and it is easy to slip up in such cases. It is best to consult a translator.
Why is it important to reserve a company name?
You already know how to choose a company name, so it's time to think about its caveat. This is a very important process because it gives you a guarantee that no one in the area will create a brand with the same or even a very similar name. Web searches will always direct to you and customers will not confuse your brand with any other. Due to the fact that in Poland a lot of people have the same name, it is also a good idea to reserve your company name from your surname.
How to come up with a company name that reflects your business - inspiration
How do you choose a company name so that it reflects the activities of its employees? It is a good idea to combine different parts of speech, such as an adjective and a noun. There is then a good chance of creating a company name with a play on words. You need to consider the marketing future of the name and how it will appear on advertisements or in logos. Try to include minimalist elements that can replace some letters, for example, but do not disrupt the reading.
