Home business idea - or how to make money at home?
For business
15 March 2023
Running your own business from home is a convenience for many who prefer to work on their own terms, have interesting ideas to pursue and a desire to actively participate in the development of the surrounding market (and maybe even the national one). However, it is not an easy task; you first have to come up with an idea that will work and be successful, and have the aptitude to run a business. This requires being creative, carrying out a thorough analysis in your target industry and taking time off. Where do you start to be able to make money from home?
Home business idea - where to get inspiration from?
Finding a way to do business from home is quite a challenge. After all, if it were easy, even more people would be running their businesses.
Unfortunately, entrepreneurs rarely choose to reveal their home-based business ideas as they try to bring them to life themselves. In extreme cases, it even happens that they try to drown out the competition. You can't blame them for this, as it is somewhat of a desirable trait among businessmen, which allows them to break through in the market. However, business is all about fair play.
The alternative to running your own business is to work for someone else, but there are employees who are not happy with the conditions imposed. This is where you should look for motivation to find a way to become your own boss.
And where to get inspiration from? The key will be to have:
- skills;
- knowledge of how the chosen industry works;
- creative imagination;
- investment capital.
Those with this set of skills will be able to start doing the detailed analysis that will bring them closer to coming up with a home business idea. While this answer may not seem complicated or insightful, it is the best possible answer because no one can post a ready-made recipe for success.
How do you come up with the best possible business idea on your own?
To begin with, consider working on a full-time basis with anyone associated with the target industry. This will allow e.g:
- gain experience (become a specialist),
- gain an insight into the market situation (supply and demand);
- understand how companies operate (advertising, online marketing, customer acquisition);
- achieve information on which elements of the business could be improved or expanded;
- acquire a customer base;
- acquire new skills (e.g. software operation);
- make a name for themselves;
- improve foreign language skills;
- discover your talent.
Sometimes, however, this is not possible, as, for example, in the artistic professions (graphic designer, painter, music producer), where entrepreneurs own a JDG (sole proprietorship). Where to get the necessary knowledge then? A good way is to expand your network of contacts and even have conversations with friends who have been in the industry for years. They will be able to give you the information you need and, in time, inspire you to take action yourself.
Another way is to follow other entrepreneurs' online activities. This allows you to keep up to date with popular trends, such as:
- shoe refurbishment;
- dropshipping of products (own online shop on the basis of being an intermediary);
- outsourcing of services (e.g. graphic design and copywriting);
- e-commerce (online shop);
- clothing brands involved in placing graphics on garments sewn by someone else, e.g. sweatshirts;
- blogi;
- property rental.
You may find that there is absolutely no one in the area doing something that is successful in another country and has already brought success to other businesses.
Does running a business from home pay off?
Yes, but provided you are running a profitable business. It is no secret that there are businesses on the market that generate a large monthly financial profit, as well as those whose owners are unable to make ends meet. Among other things, it all comes down to whether the business idea was innovative, sensible and in a niche.
In order to gain real insight, an initial analysis needs to be carried out on what reasons it might be profitable to run the business, but also what reasons it might not be.
Why does running a business from home pay off?
Establishment provides:
- higher earnings - assuming you have regular access to customers interested in your product or service;
- freedom of action - the owner himself chooses the days and working hours;
- saving time and money - no commuting and no need to rent an office.
These factors are the reason why most people would like to do this job in life and not anything else. At the same time, they are also the reason why some people go broke and get into debt - lured by the vision of a pleasant life, they do not realise that in order for a business to be profitable, a lot has to be sacrificed first.
Why might it not be profitable to run a business from home?
Running a business can be no road paved with roses. It requires:
- great self-discipline;
- own contribution, often financial;
- working irregular hours, especially at the very beginning;
- organise the workspace (in some cases);
- cooperation with other companies, e.g. in marketing or logistics;
- to come up with an idea that works.
The truth is that, more often than not, managing one's own business during its initial period of existence requires an investment of one's private time and money. This is problematic insofar as companies are often unable to generate significant profits even during their first year of operation. Establishing a position and attracting customers is a time-consuming task.
This time is worth surviving in order to become independent in the future, especially if you are confident that you have come up with a profitable business idea. The problem, however, is that some entrepreneurs are not able to determine this objectively.
The fact remains that if you have already come up with an idea for a home-based small business, developed a strategy for how to do it, then you should move on to implementing it.
Working from home as a freelancer - is it a good idea?
Freelancers have the ability to manage their own time, take on challenges from a variety of industries and complete assignments remotely, which provides convenience and comfort. This approach to work requires self-discipline, time management skills and high motivation. Is starting out as one a good idea for your first small home-based business?
It all depends on whether they can get enough clients and projects. This is by far the hardest part of a freelancer's job, because even if they have masterful skills but don't make sure they market themselves properly, they will have nowhere to go and no one to use them for.
Those who are not intimidated by this vision will be pleased to hear that yes, being a freelancer is a great idea. With this form of employment, you can usually work from anywhere in the world; allocate as much time to a task as you want and further develop your hobbies and industry interests. Freelancers have full control over their career and earn based on the results of their work.
Home business ideas for freelancers
What home-based business would be ideal for a freelancer? All those that require the use of a computer, ie:
- content creation (copywriter, graphic designer, video creator);
- planning and development of business strategies (marketing and PR);
- design (architecture, music production, websites, UX);
- counting (e.g. accounting).
While this list is obviously not complete, what is striking is that all of these activities are service business ideas for taking over a company's responsibilities on an outsourced basis. More and more companies, often even multinationals, prefer to outsource minor tasks to freelancers, rather than employing a person to do so, thus offering a full-time job. This is precisely the opportunity freelancers should seize.
Good business idea - how to attract customers?
How do you reach your customers and increase the visibility of your business? The first step is to analyse your target audience:
- what they are interested in;
- what age they are;
- How much money they are able to spend on the product/service;
- which media they use;
- what their main needs are.
In answering each question, the entrepreneur should imagine a single entity and then choose the appropriate information and advertising (social media) channels. Among the most popular and important at present are:
- Instagram;
- TikTok;
- YouTube;
- websites.
Through them, the majority of the population can be reached without leaving home. All you need to do is have a phone and find a way to ensure adequate coverage.
What should you bear in mind when deciding to open a business from home?
What should you bear in mind when looking for an idea for your own business? First and foremost, to make sure that the chosen business is completely legal. This is a problem that most often affects shop owners wishing to sell exotic goods, such as products containing psychoactive substances, which are legal outside the European Union.
Next, you need to consider a suitable work space - it is advisable to set aside a separate room to be used exclusively for the JDG so that you can separate your private life from your business.
The next important step is to create a business plan. Without it, you have no chance of achieving success. A SWOT analysis is suitable at the very beginning, but as the company grows, more accurate tools will be needed to examine the current market situation.
Add to the list the selection of appropriate equipment and working tools, including business management and accounting software. The implementation of a home business idea needs to be approached seriously in order to be reliably prepared for the moment when the first customers appear.
It is also important to define working hours and organise the way things are done. This can be done by using computer applications that count the exact time spent on a task. The entrepreneur is then able to calculate how much he or she earns per hour and, based on this, decide whether the activity is profitable.
Home-based business vs. undeclared activity
As most ideas for a sole proprietorship assume at the outset that the financial profit generated is a form of self-indulgence rather than full-fledged earning, a question arises: should the business start-up be notified and registered?
The answer to this question is determined by the amount of income received. If it does not exceed per month in 2023:
- PLN 1745, from 1 January to 30 June;
- PLN 1800, from 1 July to 31 December;
it is possible to run one's own business without having an entry in the CEIDG (Central Register of Business Activity and Information).
How do you reconcile running a home-based business and everyday life?
To achieve this, it is advisable, first of all, to set yourself specific working hours and free time, which should be devoted exclusively to daily chores and family. A good idea for your own home-based business, and then its plan, should take this into account.
It is also crucial to designate your workspace at home and separate it from your private area. This will allow you to concentrate on the tasks at hand and avoid being distracted from your work during the day.
Unfortunately, however, one has to be aware that at a certain point in running one's business, especially if it is hobby-based, the line between everyday life and business starts to fade. Sometimes, clients who are key to the further development of the JDG call at unusual times and you then have to decide what is more important: the success of the business or your own free time?
When running a business from home, are we entitled to any relief?
Those setting up their first JDG business are able to take advantage of the so-called start-up relief, which means that they do not have to pay social security contributions for a period of six months. This is the moment to give the most and use it for all the investments that will generate more financial profit in the future.
Interesting home business ideas abound, but you have to come up with them yourself - no other entrepreneur will share them because they prefer to use them themselves.
