Well-preserved and undamaged goods are the hallmark of any self-respecting business. This is why storage is a very important element for a business - including an online one. In order to take good care of your product range, you need to follow certain rules related to storage.
The definition of warehousing revolves around statements such as storing or storing goods. In reality, the process is much longer and more elaborate. It begins when the goods are received into the warehouse and ends when they leave it. In the meantime, in addition to storage and warehousing, there are activities such as picking, maintenance and recording.
Each of these elements is very important and ensures the efficient operation of the storage facility and the proper storage conditions of the goods. However, supervising a storage facility requires specialised knowledge and well-trained staff. So how do you manage the whole process?
Four phases of goods storage
The storage process consists of several phases. A number of responsibilities are assigned to each of them.
-
Receiving goods
The receipt of goods into the warehouse is the first phase. In this part, verification is important so that the incoming goods match the data contained in the documents. Receiving goods also involves unloading, sorting the goods and preparing them for storage.
-
Storage of goods
The second phase consists of arranging the goods in an orderly manner. In this part, the assortment is stored only temporarily. It must be ensured that the prevailing conditions (e.g. temperature) are adapted to the needs of the stored goods. In addition, it must be conserved and constantly monitored.
-
Preparation of goods
The third phase consists of taking the right amount of goods from stock and preparing them for further transport. This step consists of picking the orders, according to the guidelines received from the customer. At this stage, the goods are packed and prepared so that they are not damaged during transport.
-
Issue of goods
The final phase is the issuing of the goods to the consignee. Depending on the specific contract, the assortment may be issued as received at the magazine or how it was complimented. In this step, documentation is equally important to verify the goods being transferred. In the final stage of the warehousing process, the goods are loaded onto the means of transport to be able to set off on their journey.
Appropriate warehouse equipment
In order for the storage process to be complete and for all the operations carried out there to run smoothly, care must be taken to equip the area in which the goods are stored. In order to do this correctly, it is necessary first of all to determine what kind of warehouse you are dealing with and what you will need to ensure that the whole process runs smoothly. Only then can the technical provision of the warehouse begin.
The technical equipment of a warehouse depends, among other things, on its size and function, the type of product stored, the type of packaging of the goods and the loading units used, the methods of storage and the preservation methods for the goods stored.
High-rise shelving units are the basic equipment of every warehouse. They enable the greatest possible space to be used, for storage purposes. Pallets play a similar role. Valuable goods can be stored in specially adapted lockable cabinets. Solid steel racks provide space for bulky goods.
The technical equipment of a warehouse should not lack transport devices (cranes), which are used to translocate goods vertically and horizontally. Among cranes, forklift trucks are the most popular. When storing goods, it is important to remember about appropriate lighting and ventilation devices, as these will allow the goods to be stored in the right conditions.
Proper distribution of goods
Among all the principles for storing goods, the correct positioning of the product range deserves special attention. This is what ensures that the warehouse space is used to its full potential. In addition, it streamlines all the work that takes place in the warehouse, allowing constant access to the goods on offer, which makes it possible to maintain them and keep the necessary records. It is also advisable to place the best-selling goods as close as possible to the place where the goods are released - this makes it easier to prepare them for transport.
When organising the storage area, do not forget that the assortment stored may change with the season, and items that are currently in demand may become less important. Therefore, the entire warehouse should be organised in such a way that it can be reorganised at any time.
