The efficient preparation of products for dispatch in a logistics warehouse is no easy task. One of the indispensable activities in this process is the order picking which involves searching for ordered goods and packing them before they reach the courier's hands. It has a significant impact on the organisation of the entire warehouse. In this article, we will try to introduce readers to the issue of order picking, answering the most burning questions.
What exactly does order picking involve?
We already know that order picking is one of the most important stages in preparing products for subsequent shipment. Its execution is simply the gathering and combining of loads located in different parts of the warehouse, in order to then create a shipment for the customer. This type of process can be carried out in virtually any storage area and occurs whenever we need to combine several items or materials. Order picking is carried out in various ways - we choose the one that best suits the needs of our business. However, it is worth optimising this entire time-consuming process or delegating order processing to a logistics operator. By working with InPost, you will gain time to develop your business, while we take care of the storage, picking and shipping of goods. Sound good? Find out more about InPost Fulfillment"
What are the methods of order picking?
As a rule, we encounter two main order picking systems. We distinguish between:
- the 'man to merchandise' method, a so-called dynamic process - this involves the order picker (the person responsible for preparing orders) moving around the warehouse area, usually using a forklift truck, and finding the products needed;
- the goods-to-man method, or so-called static process - this is fully optimised picking. This means that, using modern equipment, goods move towards the operator so that the employee does not have to move around the warehouse;
Some companies opt for a mixed system - using both the movement of the order picker and appropriate optimisation equipment. In this case, the choice of method will depend on the type of product. In a single warehouse, therefore, we can use multiple strategies if it allows us to significantly improve the work.
How to shorten transport during order picking in the warehouse?
Whatever we do, time is of the essence. For a logistics centre to work efficiently and effectively, we should not allow delays. As it turns out, the main problem with order picking is not infrequently excessive transport. Of course, moving between picking locations is unavoidable, but it is worth streamlining and optimising the process. How? This will be achieved in two ways:
- by shortening picking distances (optimisation of the so-called picking paths),
- by reducing the number of picking passes through appropriate order management.
How do you adapt your order picking method at the start of your business?
When we are just starting our e-commerce business, we have a lot of doubts and concerns - these also relate to logistics and the storage of goods. Fortunately, a small team of employees is all we need at the start. Handling a modest number of orders per day does not require the development of an exact picking strategy. Picking, preparing and packing the goods can then be done manually by a designated person. He or she can handle each of these activities alone. However, it is necessary to focus on improving the functioning of the warehouse, i.e. optimising the work and reducing the time spent picking orders. This can be achieved by taking into account factors such as the location of the products and how often they are ordered by customers when storing the goods. The basic ABC storage method will work well. You should also pay attention to the weight of the individual items. The heaviest items should be placed closer and on lower shelves.
Which areas in the warehouse are worth improving?
If you want order picking to always run smoothly and without any problems, you need to ensure smooth movement around the warehouse area. For this reason, it is a good idea to plan out the areas and departments and prepare a map. Make sure that every employee can easily read and remember it. Avoid unnecessary details and ensure that the different sections are separated by colours or symbols. Another aspect of improving the warehouse is the numbering of shelves and racks. The numbering should be uniform, so that the warehouseman can easily find the goods and it will take him much less time. Speaking of numbering, it is also worth paying attention to the goods. Assigning an individual EAN code to each product will help deal with finding specific items.
Order picking is a process that no warehouse can do without. Although it seems rather complicated and time-consuming, it does not have to be. It really all depends on how the work is organised and optimised.
