Does a standard power strip with a switch provide protection against power surges?

Not every power strip with several sockets protects equipment from power surges. A standard extension lead with a switch merely distributes the power supply and allows you to switch off all connected devices at the touch of a button. Nor does the presence of an anti-interference filter mean that the product provides surge protection.

A surge-protection power strip contains an additional circuit that limits the energy of a voltage surge. However, its components gradually wear out, particularly following severe surges. As a result, the power strip may continue to supply power to the computer, even though it no longer protects it as effectively as it should. That is why it is worth choosing a model with a protection efficiency indicator, which should be checked regularly. If the indicator goes out or changes colour, you’ll know it’s time to replace the power strip.

How do you choose a surge-protection power strip for your computer?

It is worth noting that:

  • protection parameters specified by the manufacturer;
  • maximum load on the strip;
  • security effectiveness indicator;
  • the number and location of sockets;
  • cable length;
  • connection requirements;
  • compliance with the relevant standards;
  • recommendations regarding replacement following a power surge or after a specified period of use.

A surge protector or a UPS – which should you choose?

The choice depends on the type of incident from which you want to protect your equipment.

If you’re keen on final surge protection, and whilst a brief power cut is not a problem, you may need a suitably selected surge-protection strip that works in conjunction with the installation’s safety devices.

How can you protect your gaming PC, office PC and home network?

Protecting the computer itself may not be enough if the surge reaches it via the router and a copper Ethernet cable – which is why you need to establish which devices are connected to one another. A surge protector and a UPS reduce the risk of equipment damage, but they do not guarantee that data will never be lost. A hard drive may also fail for other reasons, and files may be deleted by mistake, due to malware or if the computer is stolen.

  • keep three copies of the data;
  • use at least two types of media;
