A tablet can make it easier to take notes, read materials, work on documents and study away from home. However, not every model will perform equally well, and for some tasks a laptop will still be more convenient. Find out what to look out for when choosing a tablet for study and work, and how to tailor it to your everyday needs.
Tablet or laptop – which tasks should you start with?
First of all, make a list of the programmes and tasks you simply cannot do without at university or at work. Do you mainly read PDFs and save formulas, or do you create complex spreadsheets, write code or use industry-specific software?
A tablet with a suitable stylus makes it easier to take handwritten notes and annotate documents. When working with long texts, the keyboard, the ability to switch between windows easily, and file management become particularly important. If you need a specific piece of software, check that it is available on your chosen operating system.
Tip:
The mobile, browser-based and desktop versions of the application may differ in terms of features, even if they have the same name. Check which add-ons, macros and file formats you need, and whether the application can be used offline.
Android, iPadOS or Windows – what should you check before making your choice?
The system affects the availability of applications, how you work with multiple windows, and how it interacts with other devices.
| System | When is it worth considering? | What needs to be checked? |
|---|---|---|
| iPadOS | When the available apps for notes, graphics and documents suit your needs | The features of specific apps and the compatibility of the stylus and keyboard with the iPad model |
| Android | When you’re looking for a tablet for studying, note-taking and working with mobile services | Stylus support, multitasking across several apps, and the update policy for this model |
| Windows | When you need computer software on a device with a detachable keyboard or a touchscreen | App requirements, ease of touch operation and accessory compatibility |
If you are using a Windows device with an ARM processor, please also check that any specialist software and drivers – such as those for printers – are compatible. You may also wish to check the security update schedule. When buying an older model, check how much support is still available for it.

What sort of screen would be comfortable for reading and taking notes?
Choose the screen size to suit the location and how you use it:
- About 8–9 inches – a format for reading whilst travelling, but with less space for notes.
- About 10–11 inches – when you want to combine portability with a comfortable typing experience.
- About 12–13 inches – more space for a PDF file and a second app.
Open a sample lesson material and assess whether the text remains legible without having to constantly zoom in. Pay attention to the screen’s aspect ratio, light reflections and brightness in the place where you usually work. Also check the weight of the tablet, including the case and keyboard. A large screen that’s handy on a desk may be less practical when reading on the bus.
RAM and storage space – how do you compare configurations?
RAM is used to run applications, whilst built-in memory stores the operating system, programmes and files. A higher value for one parameter does not replace the other. Do not use the same RAM threshold for Android, iPadOS and Windows. Different systems and applications use resources in different ways. When working with graphics, video editing or large documents, check the performance tests for similar tasks.
On an Android or iPadOS tablet, the version One hundred and twenty-eight gigabytes It is worth considering for documents, notes and a modest collection of materials. 256 GB or more It may come in handy for recordings, large projects and files stored offline.
If your model supports microSD cards, check what sort of data you can store on it. The card can hold content, but it does not increase the RAM or fully replace the internal storage.
A stylus and a note-taking app – how can you check how comfortable it is to write with them?
A touchscreen does not automatically mean it supports an active stylus. Check the exact model numbers of the tablet and stylus in the manufacturer’s compatibility list. When taking notes, precision, minimal lag and the ability to ignore accidental hand touches are key. Pressure sensitivity is particularly useful when drawing.
If you can test the kit, follow these four steps:
- Write a few sentences in small handwriting, resting your hand on the screen.
- Add comments to the PDF and highlight a section of text.
- Open your materials and your notebook side by side.
- Export the note and check whether it can be read easily on a computer.
Please also check how to charge or replace the stylus battery.

Keyboard and case – what affects your comfort whilst working?
A case with a built-in keyboard forms a single unit, but it adds to the weight and may take up quite a bit of space when unfolded. Check how stable it is on your lap or on a small table, and the range of screen angles it offers. A separate keyboard allows you to position the tablet more freely, but requires a stand and extra space. If you type frequently, test the key spacing, Polish characters, shortcuts and the trackpad, if you intend to use it.
Make sure you choose a case that matches the exact model and generation of your device. A similar screen size does not guarantee that the cut-outs, buttons or stylus slot will fit.
Battery and charging – will the tablet last a whole day of lessons?
The stated video playback time does not indicate how long the tablet will last during video conferences and note-taking at high brightness. Look for test results from scenarios similar to your own and factor in the possibility of recharging between sessions. Check whether a charger is included in the pack and what power rating and charging standard the tablet, cable and power bank you’re using support. A higher power rating on the power supply alone does not mean that the device will be able to utilise all of it.
If you have frequent online meetings, you should also check the position of the camera whilst using the keyboard, the quality of the microphone and whether you can connect headphones.
FAQ: Frequently asked questions about tablets for study and work
Can a tablet completely replace notebooks and textbooks at university?
It can replace notes and textbooks that are legally available in digital format, provided the app supports PDFs, exporting and synchronisation. Make a backup and check the course and exam regulations. A tablet may still not be able to replace a laptop required for specialist software.
Which tablet features are most helpful for effective learning?
The most useful features are the active stylus, split-screen mode, annotations in PDFs, synchronisation and export to popular formats. Also check out the search function within notes and keyboard shortcuts. On an 8-inch screen, working in two windows will be considerably less convenient than on an 11–13-inch screen.
How can you tell if a particular tablet is suitable for taking handwritten notes?
Check that the stylus is compatible with the tablet, that it offers precise writing, and that it ignores accidental hand touches. Pressure sensitivity is particularly important if you also intend to draw. Please provide Von Halski with the full tablet model and the required specifications so that he can compare the offers available on InPost Mobile.
Is it worth choosing a tablet with an LTE or 5G modem for university studies?
Yes, if you often work whilst travelling or need a connection that isn’t reliant on the university’s Wi-Fi. For occasional use, a smartphone hotspot is usually sufficient. Compare the cost of the mobile version and a subscription, SIM or eSIM support, and the impact of poor signal strength on battery life
