Wired or wireless headphones – which should you choose?

Although wireless models are now with us almost everywhere, traditional wired headphones still work well with computers, consoles and audio equipment. The two types differ not only in how they connect, but also in terms of comfort, latency and compatibility. We compare their features and advise which are best suited to work, music, gaming and activities outside the home.
Wired or wireless headphones – how do they differ?
The most significant difference lies in the way the signal is transmitted: wired headphones receive the signal via a cable and do not usually require their own power supply, whilst wireless headphones use radio transmission and a rechargeable battery. This affects mobility, latency, compatibility and how they are used.
| Wired headphones | Wireless headphones | |
|---|---|---|
| Power supply | usually without charging | charging required |
| Signal | stable, with low latency | depends on the codec and the environment |
| Mobility | restricted by a cable | great freedom of movement |
| Operation | the cable and plug wear out | the battery is running out |
The cable does not guarantee better or ‘lossless’ sound quality. It eliminates the compression typical of many Bluetooth connections, but the final result depends on the recording, the digital-to-analogue converter, the amplifier and the headphones themselves. A good A wireless model might sound better than a poor-quality wired one.
How are headphones constructed and how do they transmit sound?
Headphones consist of a housing, drivers and a wired or wireless signal transmission system. The driver converts the electrical signal into vibrations of the diaphragm, which we hear as sound. The signal can be transmitted either as an analogue signal via a mini-jack or as a digital signal via USB-C, Lightning or Bluetooth.
The most common method is dynamic transducers. Planar and electrostatic designs are less common, and some of them require a more powerful amplifier. However, the type of driver alone does not determine the quality – the following factors are also important:
- tuning,
- housing,
- fit,
- level of distortion.
The frequency response, for example from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, does not describe the character of the sound either.
Via the connector 3.5 mm mini-jack an analogue signal, which has been prepared in advance by DAC converter in the device’s amplifier. Universal Serial Bus Type-C and Lightning They usually transmit digital data, which is why the conversion takes place in the headphones or the adapter.
With a Bluetooth connection, the audio is encoded, transmitted wirelessly and decoded in the headphones. SBC, AAC, aptX, LDAC and LC3 differ in terms of, amongst other things, sound quality, stability and latency. ANC uses microphones to reduce constant noise, whilst Transparent mode transmits ambient sounds to the ears. These functions require a power supply, even when the model in which they are installed is powered via a cable.

How long do wireless headphones last on a single charge?
The TWS earphones are working usually around 5–10 hours, and the case can recharge them several times. Over-ear models often last for several dozen hours — for example, around 30 hours with ANC and 40 without it. Factors that reduce this battery life include high volume, phone calls, ANC, a weak signal and low temperatures.
A few minutes of fast charging can provide several more hours of playback, although the exact result depends on the model. Please note that the battery loses capacity over time.
Audio delays – when do they matter?
With music, the delay isn’t a problem, and a video player can compensate for it. In rhythm and esports games, however, it can sometimes be noticeable. Gaming modes, LE Audio or aptX-compatible solutions can help, but they must be enabled on both ends. The most reliable options are a cable or a dedicated 2.4 GHz connection via USB. Bluetooth can be affected by interference from other devices, obstacles and distance.
Did you know that…
Latency is the time between a sound being generated and it being heard. In a cable, it is usually negligible, whereas with Bluetooth it depends on the codec, buffering, electronics, the system and the application.
Which wireless headphones are best for running and sport?
For running, choose a lightweight model that stays in place when you’re moving. Ear hooks, wings or well-fitting ear tips can help. Check the IP rating of the earphones themselves, not just the case. IPX4 means resistance to splashes and is usually sufficient to withstand sweat or light rain, but does not allow you to swim or wash the equipment under a tap.
Structures open-ear, including bone conduction, which transmits vibrations through the bones of the skull, leaving the ear canal open. They make it easier to hear your surroundings, but they do not guarantee safety: music can still mask warning signals.
Which headphones are the safest for your hearing?
Custom-fitted earplugs or ANC help you listen at a lower volume in noisy environments. Open-ear designs enhance your awareness of your surroundings, but do not limit the amount of sound reaching the inner ear.
Safety depends on the sound level and the duration of exposure, not on the cable or the type of transducer. The WHO states approximately 40 hours per week at 80 dB, but only 4 hours at 90 dB. ‘60%’ does not correspond to the same number of decibels on every mobile phone, so use the volume measurement or limit and take breaks.
A cable at your desk, Bluetooth on the go – can you combine the two?
Yes. Many wireless headphones can also be connected to a computer via a mini-jack or USB cable. This means you can enjoy a stable connection whilst gaming or working at your desk, and switch to Bluetooth when you’re out and about.
Before purchasing, however, check whether the wired connection supports a microphone, whether the earphones work once the battery has run out, and whether ANC, transparency mode and DSP-based features are available in wired mode.
FAQ: Frequently asked questions about wired and wireless headphones
Do wireless headphones with a cable still work once the battery has run out?
It depends on the design. Models with a mini-jack input and a passive wired mode often continue to play sound, but ANC, DSP equalisation, touch controls and, in some cases, the microphone may stop working. The USB-C cable alone does not guarantee operation without a charged battery.
How do the LDAC and aptX codecs differ from the standard SBC?
SBC is the standard codec for classic Bluetooth audio. LDAC and variants of aptX may offer higher bitrates or lower latency, but they do not guarantee better sound quality. Implementation, stability and tuning also matter. Both the headphones and the source device must support the codec.
Do wireless headphones work with any mobile phone?
Most Bluetooth models will connect to a modern smartphone, but not every feature will work. The codec, the manufacturer’s app, surround sound, Multipoint or updates may require a specific operating system. Check compatibility, especially if you have an older phone.
How can you listen through headphones without damaging your hearing?
Control the volume and the time, and take breaks. The WHO states that a safe listening time is approximately 40 hours a week at 80 dB or 4 hours at 90 dB. In noisy environments, it is advisable to use the ANC function rather than turning up the volume, and if you experience any pain, you should stop listening.
Why are wired headphones recommended for e-sports games?
The cable ensures low, predictable latency and is not susceptible to radio interference, which helps you react quickly to in-game events. Bluetooth can cause a noticeable delay. A wireless alternative is a headset with a dedicated 2.4 GHz adapter.
What design features ensure stability whilst running?
Hooks, wings, the right size ear tips, a lightweight design or a well-fitting open-ear headband can all help. The earphones should stay in place without causing discomfort.
Where can I buy some good headphones?
You don’t have to analyse all the connectors, codecs and operating modes yourself. Von Halsky, the shopping assistant in the InPost Mobile app, will search through the offers and suggest options tailored to your needs. You can type or say, for example, “wireless headphones with ANC for use in an open-plan office”. By Halsky It will display the offers in a clear carousel. It can also compare them and sort them according to a specific criterion – for example, the lowest price.
