A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) can provide backup power for a home router, a workstation, office equipment or a server. In each of these cases, however, different specifications are important. We’ll advise you on how to choose the right power output and runtime, and explain when a basic model will suffice and when it’s worth consulting a specialist when selecting a solution.

What is a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) and what does it protect against?

The UPS takes over the power supply to connected devices when there is a power cut. This means you can save your work, shut down your computer safely, or keep your router, point-of-sale system or server running until the power comes back on.

Depending on its design, a UPS may also mitigate the effects of voltage fluctuations and certain types of mains disturbances. However, this does not mean complete protection against every power surge or direct lightning strike. Nor does a UPS replace data backups – it reduces the risk of data loss due to a sudden power cut, but does not protect against hard drive failure, user error or cyber-attacks.

You will most commonly come across three types of emergency power supply:

  • UPS offline – When the mains supply is working properly, it powers the equipment directly; in the event of a power cut, it switches to battery power. This is the basic solution for less demanding devices.
  • UPS line-interactive – It can compensate for some voltage fluctuations without switching to battery power. It is often chosen for computers, networking equipment, small offices and less demanding servers.
  • UPS online – It continuously powers the loads via a double-conversion system, ensuring that switching to battery power does not cause any interruption. Such devices are primarily used in situations where high-quality and uninterrupted power supply is essential.

The more critical the connected equipment and its uninterrupted operation are, the greater the importance not only of power output and backup time, but also of monitoring, the ability to automatically shut down systems, and the potential for further expansion of the installation.

How do you choose the right UPS capacity?

Check before you buy total energy consumption by the devices that are to be connected to the battery-backed sockets. Do not choose a UPS based solely on the power rating of your computer’s power supply. A 600 W ATX power supply does not mean that the computer draws 600 W at all times.

It is best to measure the power consumption of the entire system during typical use and under heavier loads. You should then allow for an appropriate power margin, taking into account short-term spikes in power consumption and any potential future expansion of the system. In simple domestic applications, a reserve of several tens of per cent is often assumed, but in the case of a server or larger infrastructure, the selection should take into account the nature of the specific load and the manufacturers’ recommendations.

You will usually find two limits on the UPS casing:

  • W, meaning watts – specify the active power available to connected devices;
  • VA, or volt-amperes – determine the apparent power.

None of these values should be exceeded. Two UPS units with the same VA rating may have different limits expressed in watts; therefore, models should not be compared on the basis of a single parameter alone.

If the computer, monitor and router consume a total of 400 W, the UPS should provide more than 400 W of active power. Taking into account a 25 per cent margin as an example, a model providing at least 500 W would be required. Next, you should check its VA rating and the expected runtime under an actual load of 400 W.

How long will the UPS keep the equipment running without mains power?

The hold time depends primarily on load, battery capacity, device efficiency and battery condition. The same UPS can power a router for a long time, but can only keep a computer and monitor running for a few minutes.

It is therefore not enough simply to know that a device has a certain power rating or battery capacity. The most reliable point of reference is the operating time chart provided by the manufacturer for a specific load, expressed in watts.

Before making a purchase, it is worth considering what you expect to happen in the event of a power cut:

  • time to save your documents and shut down your computer safely;
  • maintaining an internet connection for a specified period of time;
  • the continued operation of the till or the point-of-sale system;
  • automatic server shutdown;
  • to maintain the infrastructure until the generator is brought into operation.

External battery modules can extend the operating time, but they can only be connected to models designed for this purpose. Additional batteries do not increase the UPS’s maximum power output.

Which UPS is best for the home and home office?

At home uninterruptible power supply It most commonly protects a computer, monitor, router, modem or a small NAS server. Its main purpose is to allow time to save your work, shut down devices safely or maintain an internet connection during a brief power cut.

For this type of application, an offline or line-interactive UPS is usually the preferred choice. A line-interactive model with an AVR function can correct some voltage dips and surges without using the battery, making it suitable for locations where the voltage tends to be unstable.

When making your choice, please bear in mind:

  • power in W and VA;
  • discharge time under full-load conditions;
  • the number of sockets with battery backup;
  • the ability to connect to a computer via USB;
  • availability of software to safely shut down the system;
  • the option to replace the battery;
  • noise level;
  • the type of output voltage and compatibility with the equipment being powered.

Not every socket on a UPS needs to be battery-backed. Some may only provide surge protection, so check the labels before connecting your devices.

If internet access is your main priority, you might want to consider separate power supplies for the router and modem. Their power consumption is usually much lower than that of a computer, so a suitably selected UPS can power them for longer. Bear in mind, however, that keeping your router running locally will not guarantee access to the network if the outage also affects the operator’s infrastructure.

Which UPS should you choose for your office?

In a small office, UPS can protect a single workstation, several computers, network devices, a NAS, a VoIP telephone system, a CCTV system or a sales system. First, you need to decide which devices actually require backup power.

It is not advisable to automatically connect every piece of equipment to the battery. Laser printers, kettles, heaters and other high-power devices can overload the UPS. In many cases, the priority will be computers, routers, switches, terminals or network storage.

For a single workstation, a model similar to those used in home offices may be sufficient. Where there are more devices, the following factors become important:

  • greater power and more sockets;
  • the ability to divide receivers into groups;
  • remote monitoring of battery load and status;
  • fault notifications;
  • automatic shutdown of compatible computers and devices;
  • the ability to replace the battery;
  • servicing and availability of parts;
  • estimated running costs.

If a single UPS is to protect several workstations, it is also necessary to plan the order in which they are switched off. Some equipment can be switched off earlier to extend the operating time of the devices that are most critical to the company’s operations.

It is also worth deciding whether the business only needs a few minutes to wind down, or whether it wishes to continue serving customers during a longer power cut. In the latter case, the UPS alone may not be sufficient – it may be necessary to limit the number of connected devices, increase the battery capacity or use an additional power source.

Which UPS is best for a server or IT rack?

A UPS for a single server, NAS or small IT rack should be selected based on the total power consumption of the system, the type of power supplies and the required backup time. It is important to take into account not only the server itself, but also the equipment needed for its operation and safe shutdown, such as storage devices, a switch or a router.

In this application, the following are important:

  • compatibility of the UPS with the devices’ power supplies;
  • sufficient power and backup time;
  • the ability to switch systems off automatically;
  • monitoring via USB or the network;
  • notifications regarding faults and battery status;
  • tower or rack format;
  • the option to connect additional battery modules;
  • availability of servicing and spare parts.

In the case of infrastructure of greater business importance, it is also necessary to plan the order in which services, systems and devices are shut down. Simply keeping the server running may not be enough if the network or storage system stops working first.

An online UPS is sometimes chosen for equipment requiring a high-quality, uninterrupted power supply, but it is not automatically the best solution in every situation. It is usually more expensive, may generate more heat and noise, and may require higher running costs.

If a power failure could bring a company’s operations to a standstill, result in the loss of important data, or necessitate the use of a generator, redundancy or dual power feeds, it is advisable to entrust the selection of a solution to a specialist. In such circumstances, it is necessary to analyse the entire infrastructure, rather than just the specifications of a single UPS.

How does a UPS help to protect equipment and data?

In the event of a power cut, the UPS provides sufficient power to allow for a short period of continued operation or a controlled shutdown of the system. This can reduce the risk of file writes being interrupted, file system corruption or the device being shut down incorrectly.

For the automatic shutdown to work, the UPS must communicate with the computer, server or NAS device via USB or a network, and the relevant software must be configured correctly. Simply plugging in the power cable will not automatically save your documents or close all programmes.

Can a single UPS protect a computer, a router and a NAS?

Yes, provided that its W and VA ratings are higher than the combined load of the devices, and the model provides the expected runtime. Also check the number of battery-powered sockets and whether the computer and NAS can be safely shut down.

Not all devices need to run for the same length of time. You can schedule your computer to switch off earlier, so that more power is left for your router or NAS.

How do I choose the right UPS capacity for a computer with a 600 W power supply?

Do not choose a UPS based solely on the power rating of the ATX power supply. Measure the power consumption of the entire system during normal operation and under heavy load. Then allow for an appropriate margin and check both UPS ratings: W and VA.

Can a power strip be connected to a UPS?
