How does a laptop battery wear out, and how can you tell?
Every laptop battery gradually loses its capacity. This process is primarily due to the age of chemical cells, the number of cycles and the operating temperature. How do you check the battery health in Windows?
You can check the battery status without opening the casing. In Windows, open Terminal or Command Prompt and type: powercfg /batteryreport
The system will generate a Windows battery report in HTML format and provide the file path. Open it in a web browser, then locate the ‘Design Capacity’ and ‘Full Charge Capacity’ parameters.
Design Capacity denotes the manufacturer’s rated capacity in Wh, whilst Full Charge Capacity shows how much energy the battery is currently capable of storing. If the second value has fallen below around 80 per cent of the first, significant cell degradation is already evident.
In the capacity history section, you can check, Did the decline occur gradually?. A significant difference between the rated capacity and the actual capacity, combined with a short operating time, is a clear indication that replacement should be considered.
How do you replace a laptop battery yourself?
You can replace the part yourself on many models, but it requires precision and the right tools. Before you begin, check the manufacturer’s Maintenance Guide or Service Guide.
- Switch off your laptop and unplug the power adaptor and all other devices.
- Hold down the power button for a few seconds to discharge any remaining power.
- Protect the workstation against electrostatic discharge (ESD).

- Open the casing using a plastic tool, without applying excessive force.
