E-marketing refers to all the promotional activities a company undertakes on the internet to communicate with the public. They offer entrepreneurs a multitude of opportunities, including the chance to stand out from the competition and gain a permanent audience. Internet marketing - what is it and how does it apply in practice?
Internet marketing - what is it really?
The increasing digitalisation and spread of the internet are associated with a number of changes and new opportunities. Many of these relate to how businesses operate, communicate with their audiences and promote their products and services. What is online marketing? Online marketing sends messages to a company's environment via the web. In the past, however, companies only used the media available at the time for these activities, i.e. radio, television or newspapers. Traditional and online marketing - what is the difference?
The internet is used not only to promote products, but also to create a brand image or build lasting relationships with customers. Companies recognise a number of advantages that arise from transferring marketing activities to cyberspace. Internet marketing, unlike traditional marketing, takes advantage of the practically unlimited (geographically and temporally) reach of the web, its multimedia character and the possibility of ongoing monitoring of the effects of actions taken. In addition, e-marketing, which is constantly evolving and offers companies newer and newer tools, is much cheaper than marketing activities in the traditional form.
Internet marketing - the most important types
Marketing on the internet is characterised by great variability. Every now and then, new tools and trends emerge that companies use to gain the attention of their audience. What is more, many types of online marketing intermingle. Marketers try to match and combine activities so that they are as effective as possible. Thus, there is no rigid framework in online marketing. What forms of online marketing are used most frequently?
Content marketing
One of the chief forms of online marketing activity is content marketing. It involves creating valuable, engaging content that engages the user and is useful from their perspective. This can include tutorials, blog articles, content published in the social media space, newsletters or e-books.
What does content marketing give businesses? Content marketing activities strengthen the relationship with the audience and build their trust. In addition to this, they can present the brand as an expert in the industry, subtly prompt the audience to perform a specific action and shape the desired brand image.
Social media marketing
As already mentioned, effective online marketing is usually based on a combination of several forms and tools. This is the case, among others, with social media marketing and content marketing, for which social media is an important communication channel. Social media marketing refers to all activities that are carried out in this space and aim to gain the attention of the audience, promote products and services or generate leads and increase conversions.
Promoting a brand and generating traffic to its website can be done using various tools (diversification is advisable). A very popular medium at the moment is TikTok. For online marketing activities, companies also use platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube or LinkedIn. The channel should be matched directly to the audience.
Influencer marketing
Influencer marketing is also linked to the previous two types of activities. The main function here is that of the influencer, i.e. an influential person who has the ability to influence a specific audience. Marketers are aware of the influence that online celebrities have on the masses of people. When the group centred around a particular persona coincides with a brand's potential customers, engaging with an influencer can bring a number of benefits to the company. Online marketing - is it worth investing in influencer marketing?
Influencer marketing is an effective tool used to increase sales, popularise a brand and build brand awareness. A message coming from a person who enjoys authority among the audience is perceived as more credible and reliable. As a result, customers are more likely to reach for products suggested by influencers (with whom they have a de facto specific relationship) than for traditionally advertised goods.
SEO activities
When listing the most important types of online marketing, it is important to mention SEO and search engine optimisation. Optimisation, which is abbreviated to SEO (Search Engine Optimisation), consists of increasing the visibility of a website in organic search results. These activities can therefore be referred to as search engine marketing.
The content published on a given page is saturated with relevant keywords, making a given address more 'attractive' to search engines. This in turn can translate into increased traffic and conversions. SEO often goes hand in hand with content marketing, resulting in, for example, engaging tutorials and blog content created in accordance with SEO principles.
Advertising campaigns
Online marketing activities are not only about creating content or working with influencers, but also about paid advertising campaigns in various forms. What does online marketing consist of? Its task, in a nutshell, is to reach a specific target group and, ultimately, increase sales (this can result from a number of elements, such as the collection of forms or increased brand recognition).
Examples of online campaigns are text, banner, product or video ads implemented using Google Ads. Other tools for paid online campaigns are Instagram or Facebook Ads, i.e. ads in the form of posts, testimonials and videos.
A common way to reach and influence a specific target group is remarketing. It involves redisplaying advertisements in various forms to those users who have previously shown an interest in a particular product or service, e.g. by visiting the manufacturer's website.
How to do good online marketing?
The implementation of any marketing activity, whether traditional or online, should be preceded by the setting of specific objectives and the development of a strategy. It is therefore fundamental to determine the results that the company wants to achieve with its solutions and then to adjust the means to achieve this.
A comprehensive definition of the target group is also an essential element of good online marketing. We are not just talking about basic data on potential customers such as their gender or age. To a large extent, the modern idea of marketing focuses on the target audience as individuals with specific needs, interests and requirements in relation to the product. Successful online marketing for companies will be tailored to them as much as possible.
Another important aspect is consistency in communication. A good marketing message is consistent with the brand image and identity. Messages that contradict the main concept of a given company are unacceptable. Inconsistency in communication can lead to image crises, loss of customer confidence and ultimately large financial losses.
Companies carrying out online marketing activities have the chance to take advantage of all the opportunities that arise from the specifics of cyberspace. One of these is easy measurability, which is definitely worth taking advantage of when conducting online marketing.
In practice, this means measuring and analysing the results of a company's communication, e.g. the number of interactions with its audience, the reach of its social media profile or the prevalence of content about the brand generated by its audience. This will make it possible not only to confirm or question the effectiveness of implemented solutions, but also to make the necessary adjustments and changes.
How do you choose the right form of online marketing?
In order for the use of online marketing tools to be successful, they need to be properly tailored. Internet marketing - how to get started online? In this case, both the specifics of the industry, the type of business and the characteristics of the target group must be taken into account. Of course, the budget available to the company in this area is also important.
What is involved in adapting the form of marketing to the group of potential customers? All marketing messages should be disseminated through communication channels that are most frequently used by the group in question. In addition, they must respond to the needs and expectations of the potential audience.
A marketer who knows who he wants to target with his messages must also determine what he wants to achieve with them. An essential aspect in choosing a form of online marketing is therefore to clearly define the expected results. For example, the aim may be to increase conversion rates, create an image or establish oneself as an industry expert.
It is important to emphasise that one form of online marketing can produce multiple results that are interrelated, such as increased sales resulting from greater reach and a good brand image shaped on social media.
Internet marketing - tools used to analyse online activities
One of the main advantages of online marketing is the ability to easily measure the effects of the actions implemented. This is facilitated by special tools that allow reports to be created, results to be compared and the effectiveness of the moves a company makes online to be assessed.
An example is online media data monitoring programmes. They enable the collection and determination of the amount of information about a specific brand in the media, such as Facebook or Twitter, over a specific time period.
Software is also available on the market that allows detailed tracking of user traffic on the website, planning of content publication or audience analysis.
How much does online marketing cost and what does it consist of?
How much does internet marketing cost? There is no way to clearly define the cost of internet marketing. It includes a number of very different tools and activities that require different financial outlays. You will have to pay a different amount for social media, influencer marketing services or Google search advertising.
More often than not, marketing agencies offer their clients individual quotations depending on the scope of the services provided, the expected results or the duration of a given campaign. It is important to cooperate with a company that enjoys trust and a good reputation in its sector.
It is worth paying particular attention to its specialisation and the proposed form of contract. It should be borne in mind that the activity of such agencies is regulated by law, on the basis of, inter alia, the grouping of the Polish Classification of Choices and Services and the code of the Polish Classification of Activities, or PKD. Internet marketing and related services are usually included in the activities of advertising agencies.
Benefits of online marketing activities
There are many advantages to online marketing, such as the absence of geographical and time constraints, easy measurability or relatively low costs compared with traditional activities. Companies have the opportunity to get to know their customers and offer them the most appropriate solutions.
In addition, they can easily communicate with a specific target group and respond to their questions and needs in an instant. Furthermore, brands have the opportunity to create their image using a number of different tools. All of this ultimately contributes to the success of the company - both on an image and financial level.
