Sending parcels is not a complicated process, but it is not uncommon to have some doubts. These may concern, for example, the correct packaging of parcels. Today we will address the latter issue, i.e. how to measure a parcel before sending it. For couriers, it is not only the weight that matters, but also how much space the parcel takes up in transit.

Learn about the types of courier parcels

To begin with, it is worth noting that there are different types of courier deliveries . The choice of a particular type will determine the dimensions, namely length, width and height.

  1. Parcel with dispatch by Parcel Machine

The use of self-service parcel machines for sending and receiving parcels has become part of our everyday life. Using Paczkomat machines, parcels can be sent and received at any time of day or night, seven days a week. However, it must be remembered that the parcel (in the shape of a cuboid) must have the right dimensions. These are:

  • dimension A :
    • dimension A max. 8 X 38 X 64 cm,
    • minimum height 0.1 cm,
    • maximum weight: 25 kg,
  • dimension B :
    • maximum dimensions 19 X 38 X 64 cm,
    • minimum height: 8.1 cm,
    • maximum weight: 25 kg,
  • dimension C :
    • maximum dimensions 41 X 38 X 64 cm,
    • minimum height: 19.1 cm,
    • maximum weight: 25 kg.

If you have a larger parcel, you can send it via Parcel Post or courier with delivery to a specified address . In such a situation there is still dimension D , in which the maximum dimensions are: 50 x 50 x 80 cm and maximum weight: 25 kg. To send such a parcel, use the Parcel Manager .

  1. Standard parcel

The most popular type of parcel is the standard parcel, which works well in a large number of cases. It is the one we use very often. It should be in the shape of a cuboid or cube. When it comes to courier parcels, the dimension of the longest side must not exceed 120 cm and the sum of the dimensions must not exceed 220 cm .

  1. Non-standard parcel

Shipping items with normal, classic shapes does not cause much trouble. But what about items that do not fit into standard boxes? Then other solutions must be used.

A non-standard parcel is one whose one of the dimensions exceeds 120 cm, or where the the sum of all dimensions (length + width + height) exceeds 220 cm . It should be noted that non-standard shipment also applies to round, cylindrical, oval or projecting parts .

  1. Bulk parcel

Sometimes large sized items do not weigh much. In such a situation, an oversize parcel is the best choice. Its weight is calculated according to the formula: (length (cm) * width (cm) * height (cm)/ 6000). If the parcel weighs more than 50 kg, you will have to pay extra for each additional kilogram. The maximum overall weight must not exceed 70 kg .

  1. Long-haul parcel

When it comes to long-distance shipping, the length of its longest side shall be more than 200 cm but not more than 350 cm . The maximum actual weight of a single bundle or element includes 30 kg. The price is calculated for each started metre of bundle length above the mentioned 200 cm.

Courier delivery - order of dimensions

Measuring a standard parcel shouldn't pose too much of a problem - of course, you'll need a decent tape measure and a parcel that has been properly packed. It will be more difficult with items of non-standard dimensions, which is sometimes quite a challenge.

Now that we have learnt about the types of parcels and what their sizes are, it is time to resolve doubts about the order of dimensions. Sometimes there is a confusing aspect when we want to measure a parcel. In all parcel size guidelines first the length is given, then the width and finally the height .

How do I avoid shipping surcharges?

On the Internet, it is easy to come across information about disgruntled courier company customers who have unexpectedly been charged extra for parcels they send. They often find out about the payment request late, which makes them even more bitter. So what can you do to avoid such an unpleasant situation and avoid paying extra for your parcels? The solution is very simple: first of all all dimensions required by the carrier must be accurately stated . They must not be underestimated - especially if we have a non-standard or very large and heavy parcel to send.

We need to approach measuring a parcel with the same care as we do in protecting its contents from possible damage. It is worth use traditional cartons . Wrapping items only in tape or foil may be considered a non-standard parcel, which will generate a higher cost. Before shipping "problematic" parcels, please refer to the current price list , the Rules of Procedure and Packing Guide .

How is the weight of courier parcels determined?

When it comes to consignments, we come across different terms to describe their heaviness. For example, we have dimensional weight, actual weight or billing weight, which can be confusing. As for the first term, it describes the actual dimensions of the parcel, i.e. its length, width, height and weight. These parameters are checked by weighing and measuring the parcel. Dimensional weighing is also known as dimension, volume or volumetric weighing. It allows the courier company to know exactly how much space a package will take up in transit. Other previously mentioned terms are also important in pricing, namely:

  • The actual weight is simply the weight of the consignment itself,
  • billing weight - is stated on the invoice and is compared with the dimensional weight.
