The choice between 2.0, 2.1 and 5.1 speaker systems depends not only on how you intend to use the equipment, but also on the size of the room and the space available. Read on to find out which speakers to choose – 2.0, 2.1 or 5.1.

What do the numbers 2.0, 2.1 and 5.1 mean?

In the descriptions of these systems, the first number indicates the main audio channels, whilst ‘.1’ indicates the presence of a subwoofer. This is a speaker designed to reproduce low frequencies. The configurations therefore differ in terms of the division of tasks between the speakers, not just the number of enclosures.

What does a classic set consist of?

What does it bring to the listening experience?
2.0 The left and right columns. Two channels that create a stereo soundstage in front of the listener.
2.1 Two speakers or small satellite speakers and a subwoofer. A stereo system supplemented with a separate bass speaker.
5.1 Three front speakers, two effect speakers and a subwoofer. A separate centre channel and sounds coming from different directions.

What does a subwoofer add to a stereo system?

In the 2.0 configuration, two speakers handle the entire frequency range. They also reproduce the bass; its range and impact are determined by their design. Large stereo speakers are capable of delivering full bass without the need for an additional subwoofer. In small desktop systems, these limitations are more noticeable.

The subwoofer in the 2.1 system fills out the lower end of the frequency range. It comes in handy for music with deep bass, the rumblings of films or sound effects in games. However, an additional subwoofer says nothing about the quality of the system. What matters is how well it works with the speakers and the volume level. The bass should complement the recording whilst maintaining the clarity of vocals and instruments.

When is it worth switching to a 5.1 speaker system?

In a 5.1 system, each group of speakers has its own role. The centre channel keeps the dialogue anchored to the screen, the front speakers create the soundstage on the left and right, whilst the surround speakers reproduce the ambient sounds and movement outside the frame.

Materials prepared for multi-channel playback benefit the most. In a film, the choice of soundtrack is crucial, whilst in a game, it is the handling of such a system and the appropriate settings that matter. A 5.1 system is also useful for music recorded in stereo. In stereo mode, it is primarily the front speakers and the subwoofer – if the setup includes one – that are active. Multi-channel recordings utilise additional speakers in accordance with the mix.

How do you connect a 5.1 system to a computer or TV?

Multi-channel audio must pass through the entire connection: from the app or player to the speaker system. A compatible plug is not enough if any of the devices only outputs a stereo signal.

Computer

An analogue 5.1 system with a six-channel input is connected to the corresponding outputs on the sound card. A common configuration features three mini-jack sockets: for the front channels, the surround channels and the centre channel with subwoofer. A single headphone output provides a stereo signal; a simple splitter will simply duplicate the signal. An alternative is an HDMI connection leading to a compatible receiver or audio system.

Television

The following are some of the ways to transmit audio from a television to an audio system HDMI ARC/eARC and optical output. ARC and optical connections support selected compressed 5.1 audio tracks, provided the devices are compatible with the format in question. eARC offers greater capabilities, including the transmission of uncompressed multi-channel audio.

Is there enough space in the room for a full 5.1 system?

The most important factor is the layout of the listening area. The three front speakers need space near the screen, whilst the pair of surround speakers should be positioned to the sides and slightly behind the listener. It is not advisable to place all the speakers on a single cabinet. The centre speaker should be positioned in line with the screen’s centre, with the sound directed towards the audience. For the other speakers, the reference point is the seating position and ear level.

The plan also includes the cable routes and the power supply. Wireless transmission to effects speakers does not necessarily mean a complete absence of cables: power supply or connections to a separate module are still required. When routing these cables is a hassle, a 2.0 or 2.1 system simplifies the set-up.

What is included in the price of the set? Shopping assistance from Von Halski

The price of a set of speakers does not always reflect the cost of the complete system. Active speakers have built-in amplifiers, whilst passive speakers require a separate device to power them. A home cinema system also involves cables, stands or brackets. When comparing 2.0, 2.1 and 5.1 set-ups, it is important to consider the total cost of setting up the chosen system.

You can order all these options via the InPost Mobile app, and the following will help you organise your order: By Halsky, a helpful shopping assistant. You don’t need to know all the audio specifications to have a conversation. All you need is information about the TV or computer you own, where you plan to place the speakers, and your overall budget. If you’re planning to expand your setup, details of the equipment you already own will also be useful.

The assistant searches for products available on the app and helps you compare their prices and specifications. When discussing your options, it’s worth considering what’s included in the package: whether the offer includes an amplifier, a subwoofer and any necessary accessories. Compatibility of connections and audio formats is confirmed in the equipment documentation.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about 2.0, 2.1 and 5.1 speaker systems

How can I expand my existing set?

You can use the shopping assistant, Von Halski. Describe which items you already have and what’s missing from your planned setup. The assistant, available in the InPost Mobile app, will help you find suitable suggestions, and you can complete your purchases within the same app. When selecting additional speakers or a subwoofer, it’s important to know the exact specifications of your amplifier and the available connections.

Why do the surround speakers in a 5.1 system sometimes remain silent?

In a film soundtrack, individual channels play when the mix calls for it. Silence in the surround channels during quiet dialogue does not indicate a fault. If they remain silent even during the system’s channel test, the connections and configuration need to be checked. Once the test is working correctly, the next step is to check the selected audio track, the player settings and the method of audio transmission.

Can a 2.0 speaker system be upgraded to 5.1 at a later date?

Yes, provided the system’s design allows for it. A pair of compatible passive speakers can be used as front speakers with a suitable receiver. You will also need a centre channel, a pair of surround speakers and a subwoofer. An active desktop speaker set does not automatically become a 5.1 system simply by connecting additional speakers – it must support such an expansion.

Does a soundbar described as 5.1 replace five separate speakers?

Such a description requires an assessment of the system’s design. Some systems have separate effect speakers, whilst others direct sound from the soundbar in different directions or use virtual sound processing. What matters is the system’s configuration, the channel layout and the room conditions. The word ‘surround’ alone does not indicate where the physical sound sources are located.
