How do goods ordered one day end up in the recipient’s hands the very next? Especially when the distance between locations can be as much as several hundred kilometres? What does a courier do?

What is a day in the life of an InPost courier like?

Parcel Delivery Day starts early in the morning – before 7.00 am. Couriers they collect parcels at the sorting centre. Each of them checks the parcels entrusted to them for any damage. The parcels are then all loaded into the van. Logistics are key here – they need to be arranged properly so that they fit and are properly secured.

All that remains is to plan the route. This is one of the key moments in a haulier’s day. It will be important to delivery of the parcel as quickly as possible – taking into account any instructions received from customers regarding collection times. Modern IT systems and mobile apps assist with route planning and allow parcels to be tracked in real time – by both the courier and the recipient.

Parcel delivery

The next part of the courier’s day is delivery of parcels via parcel lockers and in person to customers. An increasing proportion of deliveries are to collection points. These delivery methods are changing the day-to-day work of couriers – instead of interacting with the recipient, parcels are delivered to machines available 24/7. Couriers often notify customers of their arrival by phone or text message.

Return to base

All parcels have been delivered. The courier drives to customers’ addresses to collect parcels from senders. He then returns to base, where he hands over the payments received that day. Finally, he submits a report detailing his entire day. It is worth noting that on Saturdays, couriers usually do not collect new parcels from customers, but only deliver those that were posted earlier. Parcels placed in a Paczkomat parcel locker on a Saturday will usually not be processed until Monday.

Does the courier deliver parcels on Saturdays?

Couriers, in accordance with the terms and conditions they deliver parcels on working days. However, there are occasions when a customer receives a text message at the weekend informing them that a parcel has been delivered to a Paczkomat parcel locker.

In fact Saturday delivery is an additional service, which may incur an additional charge. To use this service, you must select the relevant option when posting your parcel – for example, via the InPost mobile app or via the API. This service is mainly available in large cities and depends on the recipient’s postcode.

Terms and costs of Saturday parcel delivery:

• This service is most commonly used for parcels posted on Fridays.

• The delivery cost depends on the courier company, the weight and size of the parcel, and the recipient’s location.

• Not every location is covered by weekend delivery – this is checked on the basis of the postcode.

Deliveries on Sundays and public holidays – are they possible?

Under standard conditions Couriers do not make deliveries on Sundays and public holidays. The exception is InPost, which, as part of its ‘Weekend Parcel’ service, allows for deliveries via parcel lockers even on Sundays. It is worth bearing in mind that if a Saturday also falls on a public holiday (e.g. 11 November), parcels will not be delivered.

Collection in person at the outlet as a weekend alternative

On Saturdays, some companies allow parcels to be collected in person from customer service centres or partner outlets. Another option is the Paczkomat parcel lockers, which they operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week – including on public holidays and Sundays.

Couriers during special periods, such as the festive season

In the run-up to Christmas, courier companies often increase the frequency of deliveries and extend their couriers’ working hours. It is not uncommon for deliveries to be made even on Sundays in December to meet the increased demand. Some companies also take on additional seasonal couriers.
