How many cars are there in Poland? The answer to this question is not clear-cut, because in the state registers there are active vehicles and the so-called dead ones. In reality, only the former are on Polish roads. Among them we can distinguish both combustion cars and electric or hybrid cars. Find out about the number of cars in Poland, as well as quantitative data on electromobility and car production in our country.
How many combustion cars are registered in Poland?
The information on the number of passenger cars in Poland has two faces. In fact, 38 674 496 means of transport are listed in the Central Vehicle Database, but around 10 million cars have the status of so-called dead souls (data from October 2021). These are cars that are more than 10 years old and formally registered. At the same time, however, there has been no information about them for at least six years. The absence of any news from the registration authorities, insurer or vehicle inspection station classifies a car as dead.
Thus, the official number of registered cars in Poland does not quite correspond to the number of vehicles that actually drive on our streets. There are 28 817 880 active cars in our country. How many of these are internal combustion models? Unfortunately, by far the overwhelming majority. Combustion models account for more than 99% of the Polish fleet.
What is the number of electric cars registered in Poland? Trend
Although a significant number of vehicles in Poland are combustion-powered cars, there is a growing interest in electric alternatives on the automotive market. How many electrically-powered cars are registered in Poland? The most recent data on this subject comes from May this year.
According to the electromobility counter run by the Polish Automotive Industry Association together with the Polish Alternative Fuels Association, there are 46 676 electric vehicles on our streets. This number of cars in Poland can be divided into two subgroups. One includes fully electric cars and the other plug-in hybrids.
How many cars in Poland run solely on electricity? Electrics account for 48% of the alternative vehicles that have been registered. This percentage corresponds to 22 476 cars. We have slightly more hybrid vehicles on our roads. In Poland, the number of registered cars of this type is 24 200.
These figures do not look good compared to the results of other European countries. Countries such as Norway, the Netherlands, the UK, Austria and Sweden dominate the electromobility rankings in Europe (data from the EV Readiness Index 2022). These countries have the best developed network of charging stations and the most extensive market for electrics. Unfortunately, in the same ranking, Poland is at the grey end, just behind countries such as Romania, Slovakia or the Czech Republic. This means that there is still a lot of work to do on our way to achieving zero-emission transport.
What is the number of cars produced in Poland?
Poland is home to three automotive concerns, including Volkswagen Poznań, FCA Poland and Stellantis (formerly Opel Manufacturing). Currently, Volkswagen is the largest player on our market, having produced 40,881 cars in the first quarter of 2022. On the other hand, 32 354 cars came off the assembly lines of FCA Poland in the same period. In the case of the Stellantis concern, it should be said that it is still in the technical start-up phase, as the Gliwice factory was only established last year.
Overall, however, it can be seen that the performance of car production in Poland is on a downward trend. Compared to previous years, there is a significant drop of up to 40%. According to representatives of the concerns, the lower production volume is mainly due to difficulties in accessing electronic components.
