An Internet domain is nothing more than a unique address that allows Internet users to find a particular website. It is an essential element allowing a website to appear on the web. What exactly is a domain and how to register it? Have a read!

Internet domain - what is it?

To begin with, let us explain what an internet domain is. It consists of two basic parts, namely the main name and the suffix. The main name is freely chosen by the registrant. It is often simply the name of a company, institution, shop or organisation. It is worth thinking carefully about it. It should be easy for your audience to remember.

The suffix - in other words, the extension - should be chosen from the available options. Available internet domains are, for example: .pl, .org, .net, .com, .info, .de. The main name together with the extension form our unique address. It will not be possible for any user to register the same main name in combination with the same domain suffix.

What is the relationship between a domain and a website? Not as much as it enables it to be launched, because for this you only need to use the admin panel in our hosting service, but it allows it to be displayed on the web in a simple form that is accessible to every internet user.

Sub-domains belong to the main or higher-level domain, which are most often used to indicate specific parts of a particular website. The number of sub-domains is practically unlimited - it is only up to the website owner how many such addresses he establishes. For example, the homepage of a given shop may be located under the address sklep.com, and its blog - blog.sklep.com.

Where do you buy internet domains?

What does it look like to buy and register an internet domain? The easiest way to do this is through a domain registrar. On such a site, check the available options and then proceed to purchase and register. The whole thing is, of course, crowned by paying for the service.

Remember that when we talk about a domain, we are de facto talking about a service, not a product. You can only register your website with a specific name and extension for a certain period of time, e.g. one year. If you do not renew the subscription - you will lose the domain.

Sometimes it also happens that the administrator imposes additional restrictions, such as regional restrictions. One might point, for example, to the .us (USA, United States) domain, which can only be registered by people living in that country or doing business there.

How much does an Internet domain cost? Most often prices start from as little as a dozen PLN per year. In subsequent years, the price may increase, so when placing an order, you need to carefully read the terms and conditions of the service.

Small companies or businesses just starting out may be interested in a web domain available for free. In this case, the easiest way would be to use a web builder. However, you should be aware of certain limitations, such as storage space or monthly data transfer. Worse still, if the owner of the main domain suddenly discontinues the service, we will lose access to our website.

Internet domain types and addresses - what is worth knowing?

By extension, domains can be divided into several types:

• National (ccTLD) - are the most popular and assigned to a particular country. For example, for Poland it is .pl, Germany - .de, Spain - es.
• functional (gTLD or generic TLD) - edu, .gov, .org, .net, .biz.
• top-level global (TLDs) - companies with a global reach are often present under the domains .com, .net, .org, .info, biz.
• regional (SLD) - can be used to promote local businesses, e.g. katowice.pl, waw.pl.

The choice of suffix type (extension), i.e. the type of domain, is free in Poland and is not governed by any top-down rules.
