Greening transport is an issue that has become increasingly important over the years. The need to ensure travel and maintain global supply chains should go hand in hand with environmental concerns. But how do we move from the fossil fuel era to a new green era?
Ecology in transport - modern solutions for transport
Modern transport ecology solutions make it possible to eliminate the negative effects of the intensive transport of people and goods on nature. This will make it possible to breathe cleaner air in the future and thus reduce the risk of civilisation-related diseases, to which smog, among other things, contributes.
Why is ecology in road transport so important? The mass use of vehicles such as cars and trucks will not only not decrease in the next decades (and probably centuries), but will probably even increase.
In the case of the former, urban sprawl, resulting in longer and longer daily commuting distances, for example, has a significant impact. In the case of heavy goods vehicles, on the other hand, there is an increase in production and consumption. For this reason, the ecology of rail, air and sea transport is important.
Environmental impact of land transport and ways to eliminate the harmful effects of combustion
Greening car transport involves gradually replacing combustion cars with electric cars and those using biofuels (e.g. hydrogen). The introduction of such drives will eliminate the use of fossil fuels such as petrol.
Powering vehicles with fossil fuels releases harmful gases - carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, nitrous oxide and methane - into the environment. These in turn affect animal and human health. The results of their use also manifest themselves in the form of climate change.
Ecology in urban transport is important for the same reason. It is encouraging that more and more public transport operators are choosing to replace their diesel fleets with electric ones. This is also happening in Poland. It is also important to take care of the development of rail transport, both overground and underground.
However, environmental sustainability in rail transport is not only about transporting passengers. It is also environmentally friendly to transport freight by goods trains instead of lorries.
Another way is to popularise individual means of transport. Public funding for the purchase of city bicycles and scooters helps to reduce the number of people travelling through the city by car.
Water and air transport and the environment
Increased air traffic also has a negative impact on the environment. Without a doubt, the ecology of air transport is one of the greatest challenges facing mankind. While goods can be transported by ship, long-distance passenger traffic is mainly possible by air.
Moreover, ships also use environmentally unfriendly fuel. Ecology in maritime transport is therefore another issue facing the modern world. The issue of the use of fossil fuels for ship propulsion has not yet been resolved.
Ecology in transport is one of the most important issues of the 21st century. Progressive globalisation and increasing numbers of people make it imperative to care for the environment. Fortunately, new technologies are bringing humanity closer to making the world a cleaner place. Nevertheless, much remains to be done.
