Are you worried about shipping large quantities of bulky goods? Not at all! The solution to your problem is a pallet shipment. From a logistics point of view, a pallet is a platform (usually made of wood) which enables the efficient transport of parcels of large dimensions. In today's article, we will take a closer look at non-standard pallets, thanks to which you can manage the shipment of even the most unusual products.
Two types of pallets, i.e. standard and non-standard
We are using courier services more and more willingly and, as a result, parcel restrictions are gradually disappearing. Every parcel (including pallets) can be classified as standard or non-standard. The idea is that parcels have predetermined dimensions that should not be exceeded. Otherwise, the parcel will be considered non-standard. As for a normal pallet with goods, it should weigh no more than 800 kg. Its base must measure 80 cm × 120 cm and be less than 180 cm high. This means that any items going beyond the pallet will be considered non-standard, which will result in a different, higher charge. Shipping prices vary, of course, and depend on factors such as size, weight or destination.
Non-standard pallet shipments - examples of items with unusual dimensions
The arrangement of the load on a pallet will not always qualify it as a standard parcel. So what can be a non-standard item? Here are some examples to illustrate:
- irregularly shaped parcels,
- parcels whose longest side is not a base,
- loose and heavy objects whose weight distribution is not even,
- liquid substances,
- shipments with a surface that prevents slipping, such as foil,
- unpalletised parcels exceeding 35 kg,
- items in loose packaging.
It should be noted that each courier company has its own rules regarding dispatch of non-standard pallets . It is sometimes the case that an item is not accepted for transport if it raises any doubts with the carrier, which is why it is very important to pack a consignment properly - especially one with unusual, large items of any size.
Transport of non-standard pallets - correct protection
W shipping of non-standard pallets there is no more important issue than safety. So make sure that no parts stick out and, when this is not possible, protect such parts very carefully, e.g. by wrapping them in plastic. Focus on ensuring that the construction is unobjectionable and robust. Distribute the goods evenly over the entire surface of the pallet. The load should not move.
Shipping non-standard pallets - what can't be transported?
It is not always the size and weight of a parcel that determines whether it will be delivered to the recipient without problems. There are products that must not be transported. Each carrier has a special list of goods excluded from transport. The most common are:
- tobacco,
- alcohol,
- explosives,
- plants,
- animals,
- hazardous substances,
- works of art,
- pyrotechnics.
What do I need to bear in mind when shipping custom pallets?
Above all, remember to secure the load firmly to the pallet so that it does not move. All items (including those protruding beyond the contours) must be properly secured so that they do not pose a risk to the transport operator, other parcels or damage during transit. Choose a sturdy pallet with high strength, check for damage - this will also ensure that the goods arrive intact. The design of the pallet should allow for safe loading as well as unloading - usually using a forklift. The centre of gravity of the load must be centred on the pallet so that the products are not tipped over. By applying these few simple rules, you will be able to shipping a non-standard pallet and your parcel will arrive quickly and smoothly without any damage. When ordering a courier, please let them know what type of shipment you require. He will then come prepared to collect it - palletised parcels require a special lift.
