VPS servers can bring the comfort of our work to a whole new level. If we are looking for fast, efficient hosting, where we will not have to worry about transfers, it is definitely worth considering such a solution. The price is also in favour - services of this type are getting cheaper very quickly. Here's everything you should know about VPS!
VPS server - what is it?
At the outset, it is worth explaining what VPS stands for. It comes from the words Virtual Private Server, which should be translated as Virtual Private Server. What does this mean for the user? According to the definition, by purchasing VPS hosting, we can use all the resources of the machine: all its computing power, RAM or disk space. It is an individual machine, available only to us.
If you want to enjoy such a service, you need to use dedicated virtualisation software. Depending on the application the hosting has, you can choose for yourself:
- full virtualisation (regardless of CPU power, virtually any software will be available to the user, e.g. Linux Ubuntu, Apache or Microsoft Windows software),
- partial virtualisation, so-called paravirtualisation (the software must be compatible with the base software - if it is based on Windows, we will not install Linux and vice versa).
The difference between server types is not just limited to performance. A key aspect is price. The cheapest VPS servers usually offer paravirtualisation and are up to several times cheaper than machines that give the user complete freedom to choose the operating system.
What parameters should be taken into account when choosing a VPS server?
Resources are the most important thing. If we are interested in such a high-performance server, it is probably crucial for us to have a top-notch work culture and powerful computing power. If the project we are working on is based on collecting a lot of data in real time, it would also be a good idea to make sure that we have a properly configured backup on our server.
Even if the service provider does not provide a Tier-1 link, we should be sure that a copy of the files is made e.g. every hour. It is also worth checking whether the saved resources can be sent to e.g. mirror servers - this is an additional security buffer which should not be underestimated. Simple, intuitive operation will also be an advantage. A clear, properly configured administrator panel can make it much easier to manage resources and analyse traffic from the domain.
Which server to choose - dedicated or shared?
If we want to create, for example, a blog or a small company website, shared hosting is fully sufficient. It is only worth making sure that it does not have too restrictive limits imposed on daily or monthly data transfer. 5-10 GB of space allocated for the needs of users is a standard, which in most cases is sufficient for many years of peaceful work with such a host.
Despite its many advantages, even the best VPS server with a panel cannot claim to be an ideal solution. Why? Physical media failures, for example, can be a big problem. It is enough if, for example, a hard drive is damaged. In such a situation, the server room employee must physically replace the media with new ones. If we do not have a mirror copy configured, we will not be able to use the service until the fault is eliminated.
