We are all familiar with recycling, but not everyone has heard of its other variations. Each of these boils down to giving a second life to waste. Upcycling ideas seem to be the most interesting form of reusing rubbish. See what you can create by repurposing used plastic, glass and paper. You are only limited by your imagination!

Upcycling - what is it?

Upcycling and recycling - what are the differences between them? Both terms refer to the creation of new things from rubbish. Their main objective is to reduce waste production. Without doubt, upcycling fulfils it in a much better way.

Recycling, i.e. reprocessing used objects or their material in such a way that they can be reused, has become most ingrained in the public consciousness. Usually the item gets a second life in a similar form. Today, many plastic bottles on shop shelves are made from recycled plastic.

Upcycling is known as a higher form of recycling. It, too, involves processing waste, but the result is a product with higher practical or aesthetic values than the original raw material. It is often difficult to see that it has been made from rubbish, and the results can be truly stunning.

Ideas for upcycling, or what can be made from used objects?

Upcycling and DIY (Do It Yourself) items have been growing in popularity recently. Ready-made inspirations can easily be found on blogs or social media related to the less waste movement. Which of these will be good for beginners? An easy one to do is upcycling clothes, e.g. creating a shopping bag out of a T-shirt. A higher level is to cut up T-shirt scraps and weave them into a bathroom rug. You can turn old towels into surface cleaning cloths.

It is surprising how many uses used bottles have. You can use them in the bathroom, kitchen, hallway or children's room. If you cut them in half, they can be used as make-up containers, flower pots, shoe organisers or vases. Can you imagine a house filled with unsightly plastic? Simply decorate your bottles or cans accordingly and they will become unrecognisable.

It is worth getting a glue gun. Use it to wrap a bottle container with string, decorate it with beads, pebbles or wooden twigs. Alternatively, you can use old clothes and pull a jumper or patterned socks over the bottles. In this way, you will provide creative entertainment for yourself and your children.

Different packaging is great for storing office or school supplies, and for larger products also toys or shoes. Upcycling for children is great fun and at the same time helps to build eco-friendly attitudes.

Upcycling and recycling - differences and similarities

How do you repurpose products so that the result is considered upcycling rather than recycling? Unless you plan to sell your creations, it does not matter. As a rule, when looking at trinkets created in the spirit of upcycling, it is difficult to recognise that they have been made from rubbish.

It is becoming very fashionable to furnish your home with refurbished second-hand furniture yourself. Even at the neighbourhood bin, you will find gems from the previous century that are just a little short of being restored to their former glory. If you do not add anything of your own in the refurbishment process, you can talk about recycling. However, if you give an object a different function than before or significantly change its appearance - you are part of the upcycling trend. The most common examples of upcycled furniture are pallets turned into coffee tables, desks or beds.

Upcycling - an idea for combating climate change

It is best to recycle the material that takes the longest to decompose, namely plastic. If you are after a renovation, consider how to implement polystyrene upcycling. Styrofoam is not recyclable, so converting it into, for example, a jewellery box or a doll's house will be a more eco-friendly idea.

Upcycling is an enjoyable hobby that additionally serves the planet. With a little bit of willingness and time, you will reduce the amount of rubbish and get new furniture or other accessories in return. Over time, upcycling ideas will start to come to you on their own!
