Transport ecology is one of the fields of knowledge that is becoming increasingly important in a globalised world. The means of travel, developed since the industrial revolution, have shortened the distance separating parts of the world. However, they have contributed to the devastation of nature. How can they be prevented? We explain in this text.
Transport ecology - environmental impact of transport
Transport ecology aims to create solutions to prevent environmental degradation. Today's vehicles are mostly equipped with engines that run on non-organic fuel. This produces harmful compounds such as carbon dioxide, methane, hydrogen sulphide and nitrous oxide.
Why is ecology in road transport so important? Because the way we travel affects the comfort of our lives. The aforementioned chemical compounds produced by cars and planes are greenhouse gases. Their emissions contribute to adverse climate change.
An example of such changes can also be observed in Poland. Harmful gases cause a disturbance in the cycle of seasons. This in turn affects the vegetation period of plants. Its displacement leads to a reduction in crop yields and, consequently, an increase in the price of foodstuffs.
Unsustainable transport also contributes to violent atmospheric phenomena. Tornadoes are becoming more frequent in Poland, especially in summer. They destroy not only crops but also human property. This is why ecology in transport is so important.
Green solutions in transport - how to implement them?
The environmental aspects of transport concern both passenger and freight transport. The reduction and subsequent elimination of vehicles using fossil fuels can undoubtedly contribute to nature conservation.
Among other things, Transport Ecology calls for the rapid development of electric cars. Incentives may include subsidies for those who are interested in such a car. The development of rolling stock and public transport infrastructure is also a positive measure.
Buying city buses that use biofuels is therefore a good solution. The expansion of the tram and train network also helps to encourage people to use public transport. Green urban transport also means investing in bicycle and scooter hire.
The ecology of rail transport also manifests itself through the amount of goods that can be transported by trains. Compared to lorries, they are able to transport much more.
Another demand raised by transport ecology is the reduction of air transport in favour of sea transport. This is because a ship can carry more freight than an aircraft. The disadvantage is the inconvenience of much longer transport times for sea carriers.
Does modern mean green? Transport ecology
By way of correction and clarification, however, it should be mentioned that there is no simple correlation between what is green and means of transport that are considered environmentally friendly. Green public and private transport uses electricity generated in power stations, which usually use coal or nuclear power. The latter leaves behind radioactive, hazardous waste.
Technological development is facing a great challenge from ecology. Logistics and private transport today require new solutions and more efficient use of renewable energy. This will not only help nature, but also people, reducing the effects of climate change and exhaust-related diseases.
