Sending furniture by courier - how do I pack furniture for shipping?
Packing furniture properly is one of the most important parts of the entire shipping process. Larger pieces that cannot be disassembled into smaller pieces require the use of a pallet. Again, courier companies impose certain restrictions on shipments to ensure smooth and safe transportation. If the piece of furniture you are sending falls within the requirements for palletised shipments, you can start packing.
First of all, the piece of furniture must be properly protected. For this purpose, bubble wrap or, in the case of more fragile items, polystyrene foam is used. The furniture should be securely fastened to the pallet and should not extend beyond the pallet area. The whole thing should be wrapped in stretch foil and all corners and protruding parts should be additionally protected with polystyrene. Before the courier arrives, make sure that the weight of the furniture is evenly distributed on the pallet and that the whole is stable. This is particularly important if there are several separate items on the pallet, which may vary in size and weight. The final stage is to place the pallet in a place where the courier can drive the car freely.
Bulky furniture shipments - how do you prepare them?
A bulky parcel is a parcel of non-standard size. Its dimensions exceed the width, height or length limits considered standard by the courier company. For this reason, the whole process of transport, sorting or storage is more problematic and the price of the service is correspondingly higher. Transporting furniture by courier in a bulky parcel requires careful protection of the parcel.
Start preparing the parcel by dismantling the individual pieces of furniture. This will not only make it easier to secure the item, but will also reduce the dimensions of the parcel. The next step is to secure the individual parts with polystyrene and wrap smaller, fragile items in bubble wrap. If you do not have the possibility of unscrewing the moving parts of the furniture, for example drawers or doors, seal them with tape so that they do not open during transport.
The next step is to place all the elements in a straight cardboard box, which will make it much easier for the courier to transport the furniture. The empty space in the parcel should be filled with bubble wrap or special air cushions - this will limit the movement of individual parts. The packed parcel should be additionally secured with a polypropylene band, thanks to which all elements inside the cardboard box will be maximally immobilised.
The final step is to measure the courier parcel carefully. A piece of furniture that you have managed to dismantle into parts usually takes up a relatively large amount of space anyway, and the whole parcel may be classified as non-standard. Determining the exact dimensions of your parcel will enable you to price it in advance, so you won't be surprised by additional charges. If the dimensions are beyond the limits of standard parcels, yet the cardboard box is relatively light, it is likely to be a bulky parcel.
How much does it cost to send furniture by courier and what does it depend on?
Prices for transporting furniture by courier vary depending on the dimensions and weight of the consignment. More often than not, packages with furniture, despite being assembled, exceed standard dimensions and are treated as oversized shipments, which increases the price of the service. On the other hand, in the case of many pieces of furniture, the cheapest and safest method of transport may be a pallet shipment, also correspondingly more expensive. The cost of shipping furniture by courier therefore depends primarily on the dimensions and weight of the parcel, but often also on the length of the route or the value of the goods being shipped.
