Not being tied to a desk, doing your job from the comfort of your own home and saying goodbye to the daily commute to a company at the other end of town - for many, these are the main benefits of remote working. However, this is not a solution that works for every job. This type of employment has its pros and cons, but we can say that it is gaining ground. What is worth knowing about remote working?
What is remote working?
Until a few years ago, it was difficult to imagine working remotely. Especially when business tasks required constant collaboration with other team members. The reality around us is changing dynamically and today work is not mainly associated with being in the office from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. With the development of the Internet and new technologies, the time has come for a revolution, which has also reached employers. It turns out that giving the opportunity to work anywhere not only allows you to stand out from other companies and attract new employees, but also significantly reduces the cost of doing business.
Which means remote working ? It simply involves carrying out the assigned duties away from the company's headquarters, e.g. in one's own home. In this model, modern technology is used to carry out tasks and the results of daily work are sent to the employer via the Internet. The remote worker communicates with other team members via instant messaging and email. Most often, direct contact with co-workers is not necessary at all - although it is sometimes the case that employers organise meetings at the company once in a while to discuss key issues.
Remote working works best for professions related to data processing and analysis. So-called freelance professionals such as graphic designers, copywriters, translators, editors, SEO specialists and social media communicators are also opting for it. Remote working does not have to be exclusively full-time. In some cases, the employee performs part of their duties stationary at the company and the rest at home.
Remote working - what are the advantages and disadvantages?
On the surface, it may seem that remote working has no disadvantages, which is unfortunately not true. Certainly not everyone will find this model of employment appealing, as not everyone has the character or aptitude for it. People with an extroverted disposition, who need daily contact with people, will quickly realise that carrying out their duties from home does not bring them satisfaction. So what are the main advantages and disadvantages of working remotely?
-
Remote working - the pros:
- the ability to carry out assigned tasks anywhere, which gives a sense of freedom and flexibility - especially for those who travel frequently;
- lack of constant supervision by a supervisor;
- you can set your own hours to carry out your duties - no need to sit in front of a screen from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m;
- many people find it easier to work from the comfort of their own home, where they feel more at ease and comfortable than in an office, thus avoiding additional stress;
- in remote working it is the result that counts, not the time spent on the task.
-
Remote working - downsides:
- the lack of time for family and the feeling that we are actually working all the time;
- the employee must self-discipline and focus on his/her assigned responsibilities, otherwise he/she will not complete the assignment by the deadline;
- a great sense of freedom can act as a demotivator and focus attention on private matters instead of work;
- In the flat, we do not always have conditions conducive to concentration and the noise caused by household members makes us nervous;
- Remote working limits contact with other people.
Remote working - a way to earn extra income
If you want to earn some money and are looking for an activity with which you can achieve this, working remotely may be the ideal solution - also for people who are thinking of starting their own business. You don't have to take the plunge and leave your full-time job right away. By working remotely, you can balance your main job with doing additional freelance work. In this way, you will gain experience, find your first clients and start to build your personal brand. You will also test whether remote working really is the best option for you and whether you would like to do it full-time. Many people don't realise that carrying out business duties from home often becomes quite a challenge. On the other hand, working remotely opens up great opportunities and motivates us to be entrepreneurial. However, we need to ensure productivity and efficiency - without these, it will be difficult to complete assignments on time and without major problems. If you do not finish your work by the agreed deadline, you risk damaging your image and losing your client.
