What about the Polish electric car? Since the launch of its prototype, things have become rather quiet about it. However, this does not necessarily mean that nothing is happening regarding it. There are bold plans for the project to come to life in the coming years. So far, only the shroud of secrecy has been revealed. So let's check out what is already known about the Polish Izera electric car.
Who is responsible for the idea of the Polish electric car Izera?
Poland's first electric car, named Izera, is a project whose roots date back to 2016. It was then that the state-owned company ElectroMobility Poland (EMP) was set up to develop the car of the future. The company is based in the centre of Warsaw and its CEO is Piotr Zaremba. The idea, which arose in government circles, envisages EMP being funded by other state-owned companies - Enea, Energa, PGE and Tauron.
The fruit of the work on the prototype car was presented on 28 July 2020. The brand is named after the river Izera, which has its source in the Czech Republic and then flows through Lower Silesia. The logo on the bonnet is intended to resemble a compass pointing the way towards the future of motoring. The Polish Izera electric car could be seen for the first time in two versions - a hatchback and an SUV. As a result, it is more or less clear what it will look like.
What will the Polish electric car Izera look like?
The prototypes of the Polish electric car unveiled on 28 July 2020 are a red hatchback and a white SUV. Both are characterised by spacious interiors. The vehicles are intended to be family cars. The design of the Polish electric cars does not differ from the latest proposals of the best-known automotive corporations.
First impressions of the aesthetics of the Polish electric car can therefore be considered positive. The vehicle's dashboard and upholstery are in ivory. The seats are upholstered in soft leather. This corresponds to the standards known from other manufacturers.
As in any modern car, the Izera will also be able to access many functions and driving information from a touchscreen. A large luggage compartment has not been forgotten in the future electric car from Poland. This is necessary due to the fact that these are to be primarily vehicles for entire families.
A team of artists from Italian studio Torino Design worked on the design of these vehicles. A Pole, Tadeusz Jelec, a renowned designer in the automotive industry, helped create the look of these models. He is best known for his work with the Jaguar brand. He created interior and exterior concepts for models such as the XJ, X-Type and S-Type, among others. Mazda and Volvo have also used his services.
How many models does the Polish electric car Izera offer?
The Izera portfolio will initially be modest. Apart from the aforementioned hatchback and SUV, no other types of cars are planned for the time being. In addition, it must be remembered that the models presented so far are really only mock-ups. They have been stripped of many key components, most notably the battery and drive train. What is more, they do not even have their trade names so far.
However, it is known what performance is assumed in the design of the Polish electric car. The maximum speed of the Izera will probably exceed 160 km/h. It will accelerate from zero to 100 in eight seconds. Importantly, both models will initially be front-wheel drive only. However, it is not ruled out that production of cars with all-four-wheel drive will be launched in the future.
Without doubt, one of the most important issues remains charging. All electric car manufacturers have problems with its duration. The Izera is supposed to be ready to drive after just half an hour. This is, of course, with a fast charger. However, topping up from the socket will probably take several hours. What is the reason for this? Because of the capacity of the batteries. It is expected to be 40 kWh for the hatchback and 60 kWh for the SUV. No doubt these will be lithium-ion cells, the recharging of which has not yet been accelerated. The range is expected to be 400 km.
Who will be the supplier of parts for the Izera electric car?
What the final performance, equipment and even appearance of the Izera will be will be determined by the choice of suppliers. The question of who they will be also remains unanswered for the time being. There are no specifics. So far, we can only rely on speculation. It is known that EMP is trying to obtain a licence for the creation of the floor pan.
There is unconfirmed information that production of the Izera is to start on floorboards from the Volkswagen Group. If this becomes a reality, the Izera will be another car built on a plate from the German group. In addition to the Volkswagens themselves, of course, this structural element is also used in the company-owned Seat and Škoda brands.
Although this information is not confirmed, this is the only manufacturer that can be mentioned by name. Virtually nothing is known about the contractors for the other elements of the Izera. They are to be mostly manufacturers from the Polish market. In the first years of production, the cars are to consist of 70% Polish parts. When electromobility in Poland allows the development of its own technology, the remaining 30% of components are also to be of indigenous origin.
Polish electric car Izera - the latest news
The Polish-made electric car is to be produced at a factory in Jaworzno. The city is located in the Silesian Voivodeship. The first cars are expected to roll off the line as early as 2024. However, such an imminent date raises doubts. This is because the construction of the factory has not yet begun.
The reason for this is the as yet unsettled formalities. The plot on which the Izera factory is to be built currently belongs to the State Forests. Only after it has been transferred to the Jaworzno municipality will it be possible to start construction. This particular location was determined by easy access to roads and railways and a power line.
The construction of the factory will be handled by two companies - Prochem and Dürr Systems AG. Warsaw-based Prochem will be responsible for organising the tender for and supervising the construction contractors. Germany's Dürr Systems AG will design the production line. This company will also design the arrangement of the welding, assembly and paint shop along with the necessary equipment.
The projects of Polish electric cars give hope that we will soon see them on the roads not only in Poland, but all over Europe. It remains to wish those involved in the creation of Izera further enthusiasm and ideas. For it is possible that Izera will be a moment of rebirth for Polish motoring.
