The shipping label is like a proof of identity for a parcel: it is an identification document containing the details of the sender, recipient, weight and dimensions of the parcel prepared for transport. This document is sometimes called in different ways, it is known as: consignment note, shipping label or shipping label, but in each of these cases we are always referring to a document that is relevant to the process of shipping a parcel. In this article, we will show you how to print a parcel label and where to stick it so that it is legible to the courier receiving the parcel, at the sorting office and finally so that it can reach the addressee without any problems.
A parcel label - where to stick it?
It is always the responsibility of the sender of the parcel to ensure that the data on the label is correct, that it is properly affixed to the goods being shipped and for any problems that may arise from incorrect information on the parcel. The generated label is downloaded immediately after payment for the shipment. The finished printout simply needs to be stuck onto the parcel - but where? Here are the rules on how to describe a parcel:
- the transport label should be affixed on the upper surface of the consignment or, in the case of cylindrical packaging, parallel along the long axis of the tube;
- do not place the label on the seam of the packaging (cardboard, foil pack, etc.) or on the corners or folds of the parcels;
- when affixing the label to the packaging, ensure that it adheres uniformly to the surface, i.e. the parts do not stick together;
- check the quality of the printout from the printer. If the shipping label is damaged or parts of it have been cut off or blurred, the parcel code will not be read correctly by the scanner;
- printing should always be done on blank paper; you can use stickers - make sure you do not use glossy paper. For stickers (kangaroos) - use unprinted film so that it does not obscure the barcode and address data;
- remember not to put tape over the barcode,
- if you are reusing packaging, ensure that all old labels have been removed.
Where can I print a parcel label?
If your online shopping goes wrong and you want to make a return, exchange or claim, simply send the parcel back to the sender. Some companies place a printed return label inside parcels, usually in the form of a sticker - simply peel off the bottom layer of protective adhesive and place it on your parcel.
If the sender has not included a parcel notification printout, you will need to print the label yourself - a home inkjet or laser printer will do the job without any problems. What if you don't have a printer at home? You can probably find a print shop in your town or city that allows you to print from your own media, e.g. a memory stick. Look out in particular for establishments such as print shops, copy shops, bookshops, libraries and even shopping centres, where you can find self-service printing stations.
What if you still have nowhere to print your parcel label? The ideal solution would be an option such as Paczkomat® InPost. To send a parcel without a label, use the InPost Mobile app.
The scheme is as follows: from within the app, you enter information such as the type of shipment, the size of the parcel and the recipient's details, and then pay to send the parcel. You place the properly packed parcel in the box in the Parcel Machine® of your choice, and you're done! You can track the return journey of your parcel online or in the app.
Types of parcel labels
If your consignment contains special items, e.g. liquid, powdery or fragile products, you can apply warning and information labels to the package. These include the following categories:
- fragile;
- do not throw;
- keep dry;
- góra/ this way up.
Affixing this type of label to the parcel will guide the courier and sorting staff on how to handle the goods inside the parcel, allowing the parcel to reach the customer intact.
