Online smog sensor - how does online air quality monitoring work?
An online air quality sensor is an excellent solution for residents of large cities who are exposed to the inhalation of health-hazardous dust and volatile organic compounds. Increased awareness of the effects of pollution on the environment as a whole has led to a greater number of air monitoring stations in Poland, the results of which are made available to users on an ongoing basis.
You can check the state of the air online on state pollution testing platforms in Poland. You do not have to think about which smog sensor to buy, as the measuring stations perform a detailed analysis of the dust content and particles of organic compounds. In addition to state measurement stations, private companies also provide valuable data. Whichever method you choose to monitor the air purity level, you can use an app for your smartphone or tablet. The mobile smog sensor will inform you about the concentration of pollutants even when you are away from home - all you need is internet access.
Types of online smog sensors
An outdoor smog sensor is used to analyse the air composition including pollutants, and particulate matter testing is performed using two measurement methods - manual and automatic. The first type of device, in which a set of disposable filters is replaced every 14 days, is considered to be the most accurate smog sensors. Each day, the sensor automatically changes the cartridge, and at the end of the testing period the filters are analysed in detail in the laboratory. There are more than 200 manual stations in Poland.
The second type of pollution meters are automatic sensors that take measurements at hourly intervals and the results are equivalent to the manual method, but are not verifiable. It is the data from these that you will most often see on websites and apps. Both types of smog sensors provide information on the concentration of PM 2.5 and PM 10 particles, as well as chemical compounds: SO2, NO2, CO, O3 or benzene.
How to use and correctly read online smog sensor data?
Standards have been defined for specific types of particulate matter and chemical compounds in the form of an Air Quality Index. You can read the data on the level of pollutants thanks to a clear table with a 7-point scale. The available categories include very good, good, moderate, sufficient, bad, very bad and no index. Each is assigned a different colour coding and information on possible health effects. The same legend applies to the map with the highlighted online smog sensors, so that by searching for a specific area and following the colour coding, you will quickly find out about the air quality in your area.
