Magda, Paczucha and the expedition to the Roof of the World
26 April 2018
Hi! It’s Paczucha here! Together with Magda Gorzkowska, I’m currently climbing the world’s highest peak. I’ll tell you a bit about our expedition, because there’s sooo much going on! Sometimes there are moments that make your blood run cold, and others that take your breath away…
We set off from Kathmandu on 10 April. From the capital of Nepal, we flew to Lukla, one of the most dangerous airports in the world (a 400-metre runway over a precipice, ending in sharp rocks – sounds terrifying, doesn’t it?). Once we arrived, we spent a week walking from village to village. As we ascended to ever greater altitudes, we began to feel the harsh weather conditions. Fortunately, on our way to Everest Base Camp, we were accompanied by local yaks, which carry local goods.
At Base Camp, we’re getting ready for the next stage of our journey. We’re training and resting alongside an international group of mountaineers, with whom we’re planning to climb an eight-thousander. Are you wondering what life is like at Base Camp? Every participant has their own tent – even me :)! We eat our meals together in the so-called mess hall. Whilst waiting for the stopover camps along the route to be set up, we practise, amongst other things, on the so-called Icefall. Abseiling, climbing with ascenders and navigating ladder sections are all part of our daily routine!
Every training session prepares us for the extreme conditions on the Roof of the World. The expedition won’t be easy, which is why we’re doing our absolute best to perfect every task we undertake – me especially when it comes to resting ;). Let’s hope it pays off! We’ll definitely be spending a bit more time at Base Camp. We’re delighted you’re with us and we’re counting on your support on this incredible expedition. Keep an eye out for further updates in the news section, as well as on our Facebook in Instagram! I’ll be back soon with some new interesting facts about Chomolungma!
