Magda Gorzkowska is on her way to Manaslu!

InPost Manaslu 2019 Expedition: Will a third Polish woman climb two eight-thousanders in a single year?

Magdalena Gorzkowska – a Polish mountaineer and Himalayan climber – set off on 8 September 2019 on an expedition to Manaslu in Nepal as part of the InPost Manaslu 2019 Expedition. From 1 to 5 October, she will be attempting to summit the eighth-highest peak on Earth. Manaslu is the third eight-thousander that Magdalena Gorzkowska will climb within 16 months. It is also her second eight-thousander this year, after Makalu, to be climbed without supplementary oxygen. To date, only two Polish women – Wanda Rutkiewicz and Kinga Baranowska – have achieved this feat. InPost is the expedition’s main sponsor.

Manaslu is Magdalena Gorzkowska’s third summit on her quest to complete the Crown of the Himalayas and Karakorum. She will be climbing with Pemba Sherpa Lama – an experienced Himalayan mountaineer – and together they will make their way via a trekking route all the way to the summit.

Itinerary for the InPost Manaslu 2019 Expedition:

• 8 September – departure from Prague
• 9 September – arrival in Kathmandu
• 10 September – journey from Kathmandu to Dharapani (1,860 m)
• 11 September – trek to Tilje (2,300 m)
• 12 September – trek to Bhimthang (3,700 m)
• 13 September – trek to Samdu (3,800 m) / rest day in Bhimthang
• 14 September – trek to Samagaon (3,500 m)
• 15.09 – trekking do Manaslu Base Camp (4750m)
• 16–18 September – rest at base camp and acclimatisation
• 19–30 September – acclimatisation and ascents to Camps 1, 2 and 3
• 1–5 October – summit push on Manaslu (8,156 m)
• 5–9 October – descent to Dharapani and flight to Prague
• 10 October – arrival in Prague

So far, Magdalena Gorzkowska has conquered Mount Everest and Makalu – she became the youngest Polish woman to reach the world’s highest peak. Magdalena was the first Polish woman to climb Makalu without oxygen bottles, thereby becoming the second Polish woman to reach the summit. In early 2019, she set out to climb two eight-thousanders – Makalu and Lhotse – within 14 days. However, after summiting Makalu, she was forced to abandon her attempt on Lhotse due to frostbite on her fingers.

Magdalena Gorzkowska (born 30 April 1992 in Bytom) was a recognised track and field athlete and sprinter before embarking on her career as a Himalayan mountaineer. In 2011, she won silver at the European Junior Championships, and a year later she finished 20th in the 100-metre sprint at the European Senior Championships. She took part in the 2012 Summer Olympics as a reserve in the 4 × 400-metre relay. She was the national indoor runner-up in the 400 metres (Spała 2013) and a gold medallist at the European Youth Championships (Tampere 2013). In March 2016, she was part of the Polish 4 × 400-metre relay team that won the silver medal at the World Indoor Championships in Portland.
