Is driving on LPG green? Nowadays, car manufacturers are looking for more and more solutions to help care for the environment. Innovative ideas are being put into practice so that the public can enjoy harmless devices on a daily basis. Which cars to drive and is LPG an environmentally friendly fuel? We answer in the article!

Is LPG green - what is LPG?

LPG, or Liquefied Petroleum Gas, is a mixture of propane, butane and other hydrocarbons. It is used as a fuel for domestic, agricultural and automotive gas appliances.

In Poland, the use of LPG began in the 1970s thanks to Zbigniew Domanski, a pioneer in the LPG sector. At that time there was little access to petrol in Poland, so it was necessary to look for economical alternatives that would be accessible to the public. But is gas an environmentally friendly fuel?

LPG and ecology

Nowadays, eco-friendly solutions are being sought in every area of life. A particular sector that contributes to pollution is the automotive industry, which is why you hear more and more about green cars. Are LPG cars also among the vehicles that do not endanger the environment?

LPG cars cannot be said to be fully green. Burning LPG still produces toxic substances (including carbon dioxide) that end up in the atmosphere, polluting the environment. However, compared to other fuels, LPG exhaust emissions are significantly lower.

Why is driving on LPG less harmful than on petrol?

There are 3 types of fuel at the filling station:

  • petrol,
  • diesel (diesel),
  • LPG.

The combustion of any fuel contributes to air pollution. However, there are some differences between these types of fuels, the impact of which is more or less harmful to the environment.

Is an LPG car environmentally friendly?

Petrol cars heat the engine to a high temperature and create toxic fumes that contribute to poisoning the environment. LPG, on the other hand, is an unleaded fuel with a low carbon content. As a result, 15% less carbon dioxide and about 60% fewer toxic substances are released into the atmosphere. It can therefore be said that compared to petrol cars, LPG is a more environmentally friendly alternative for vehicles.

LPG cars vs electric cars - which is greener?

We are hearing more and more about electric cars, which are advertised as environmentally friendly green cars. However, is electric really the best solution?

Unfortunately, the infrastructure in Poland is not yet adapted to long-distance driving by electric cars. There are not many charging points for electric cars. They can be found at some petrol stations and other points, but it has to be taken into account that charging a battery takes a dozen or even several dozen minutes to be able to move on. Charging electric cars means paying for both the energy consumed and parking at the charging station.

Electric or LPG car - ecology

Electric cars are said to be environmentally friendly, but in order to generate the electricity to charge the car, lignite or black coal is used, which emits a large amount of carbon dioxide. So also electric cars, contribute to the production of toxic substances.

The cost of maintaining an electric car is also an important consideration, as it requires special oils to function properly and for safety, as using oils that are not designed for this type of car can pose a risk of electrocution.

Whatever the fuel type, every car contributes to pollution. However, when deciding to buy a new car, it makes sense to opt for an LPG engine. Gas emits far fewer toxic substances and is cheaper to maintain than other fuels.
