An electric car is still a very big expense. The newer and more advanced the car models, the higher the prices. Many people, despite subsidies, cannot buy such a vehicle for themselves anyway. For this reason, a completely new option has emerged - converting a car to electric. It turns out that a petrol engine can be replaced by an ecological equivalent. How to do it and is it worth it?
Converting a car to electric - what's worth knowing?
Converting a car to electric is an alternative to buying a new or used electric car. The idea itself ties in with the idea of caring for the environment, as it does not force drivers to replace the whole vehicle, but only parts of it. This saves money as well as reducing waste production. The originator of such measures is a company from France, which wants to introduce ready-made kits for converting a car to electric in the near future.
In Poland, this trend is not yet very popular, but the conversion of cars to electric is taking place. They are carried out especially in buses and vans, which are very expensive in their original electric versions. After such a change in the car, you still need to arrange a few documents, e.g. a certificate from an electrician or a car expert, which will confirm that everything is in order and the car can be considered electric.
How much does it cost to convert a regular car to an electric motor?
Representatives of the French brand, which wants to sell kits for changing petrol cars to electrics, state that converting a car to electric will be able to amount to €5,000. This is a very low amount when you consider that replacing individual components with electric ones on your own could be much more - even around several tens of thousands of zloty. This is the cost after obtaining the subsidy, because without it, a kit for one vehicle could cost more or less EUR 8 thousand. It is worth bearing in mind that such a replacement does not provide a very impressive range of kilometres. It is estimated that it would be around 100 kilometres per charge. For commuting to a workplace that is not far from home, this would still be sufficient. When it comes to fitting more powerful batteries, arguably the price would also be significantly higher. Still, it is less than buying a new electric from the showroom.
How can a classic car be converted into an electric car?
Converting a car to run on electricity is not very complicated. This is because the construction of an electric is much simpler than that of a petrol-powered system. Parts such as the alternator or starter have to be removed from a petrol vehicle, and batteries of a suitably matched capacity have to be placed. When selecting the batteries, the weight of the car must be taken into account, as well as the distance per charge. Cars converted in this way can still use the old gearbox. If you don't know enough about cars and don't know how to convert a car into an electric vehicle, you should seek specialist advice. Only then can you be sure that the car is safe. Remember also that such a vehicle needs access to an outlet and regular charging.
