Types of packaging for secure shipping abroad
To ensure that parcels are sent safely abroad, it is useful to know the different types of packaging. Here are some of them:
- Cardboard box - perfect for a variety of items, especially heavier and larger items, providing robust protection.
- Folio pack - ideal for packing clothing and smaller and lighter items.
- Paper/cardboard envelope - great for shipping documents and thin items while ensuring lightness and security.
How to pack a parcel abroad? Choosing the right cardboard box
The safe journey of a parcel starts with choosing the right packaging, which should be tailored to the size and weight of the item being shipped . A box that is too big can lead to the contents moving around, which in turn increases the chance of damage occurring. Conversely, a cardboard box that is too small may tear under the pressure of other parcels during transport.
For lightweight consignments of up to 5 kg All you need is a two-ply cardboard with a density of 375 g/m². What does this density mean? Imagine you are holding a thin cardboard box - if it is light and easily crumpled in your hands, it probably has this density. In practice, this means that such cardboard is not suitable for protecting heavier objects.
Denser cardboard (e.g. three-ply with a density of at least 427 g/m²) is thicker and more pressure-resistant. As is the difference between regular cardboard and corrugated cardboard used for luggage and household appliances. This is why it will perform better for packing heavy parcels, up to 25 kg .
However, outer packaging is not everything! The inside of the parcel must be adequately protected. Free it is a good idea to fill the spaces with e.g. sprinkles, bubble paper or crumpled newspapers . This basic protection will prevent the contents from shifting. If you are sending several items, separate them from each other to avoid additional damage. This method will work especially well when sending gift sets and products of different shapes and sizes that are packed in a cardboard box.
Finally seal the parcel well . This is best done using the 'double H' method - the tape should run along both the main edges of the closure and additionally along the carton to reinforce the whole. If you are sending a parcel without a label, write the tracking number in a visible place. For parcels with a label, stick it on the flat surface of the carton, away from the fasteners.
How do I protect my parcel from damage during transport with InPost?
During transport, the parcel is exposed to shocks, pressure and changes in position. At InPost, we care about the safety of every parcel, however proper packaging is the responsibility of the sender . If you are sending fragile items, please protect them cardboard-to-cardboard method . That is, simply place the product in a smaller box and then in a larger cardboard box, filling the space between them. This is a great way to protect electronics, glass cosmetics or other sensitive items.
Each item requires an individual approach to packaging. Books and other paper documents may seem less susceptible to damage, but even they are capable of being damaged by moisture or accidental tears in the packaging. That is why only use packaging that is undamaged and intended for shipping .
An important part of securing your parcel is also to seal the packaging properly. Use strong adhesive tape and ensure that all edges are taped securely . For larger shipments, don't skimp on protecting the components. Use several layers of tape for extra reinforcement. Also remember to check the quality of the carton itself - if you notice any damage or weakening of the material, you'd better repack everything in another box.
How do you pack clothes, electronics and other items for shipping?
Each type of item requires a different way of packaging in order to reach the recipient in perfect condition. Clothes are some of the easiest items to ship - just place them in a foil packet, a paper envelope for shipping or a cardboard box appropriate to their size. However, remember not to use too large a package, as the empty space needs to be filled in addition for the safety of the parcel. If the garment is particularly delicate, it is a good idea to wrap it in an extra layer to avoid creasing.
When shipping clothing, a foil pack or small cardboard box is sufficient. Electronics should be wrapped in bubble paper and immobilised in the packaging. To fillings can be used, e.g. sprinkles, crumpled paper or paper pulp . Even if you are sending the device in its original box, extra protection never hurts.
Cosmetics in liquid form must be adequately protected from leakage . It is a good idea to place them in a sealed plastic bag and wrap them in soft paper. If your cosmetics are in glass bottles, use special cardboard dividers or foam inserts to separate the individual items from each other. In this way, you can easily protect the bottles from breaking when the package is accidentally bumped.
Parcel packing mistakes - what to avoid when shipping internationally?
Improper packaging of parcels can lead to delays in delivery and even damage to the contents. One of the most common mistakes is to use a reusable cardboard box that already has a previous kinks and weakened structure . Such packaging may fall apart during transport. It is therefore better to go for new and sturdy boxes of an appropriate thickness. Equally it is important to remove old labels which can cause confusion when sorting a parcel.
Another common mistake is inadequate protection of contents . Items should be immobilised in the cardboard box. Before you send your parcel via Parcel Machine®, test your packaging. Shake the filled package gently and make sure that nothing moves inside. If you hear any sound indicating movement of the contents, add more cushioning material or improve the way the items are arranged inside.
Every parcel has a story - it could be a gift for a loved one or simply a saleable item sent to someone abroad. A well-packed parcel is a guarantee of safe delivery, as well as comfort and peace of mind for the sender and recipient. It is therefore worth taking a little extra time to prepare it carefully.
