The number of electric cars in Poland is an issue that can be considered in various ways. On the one hand, there are more and more such vehicles. On the other hand, they are still rare among millions of cars. So how many electric cars are there in Poland? Which models are the most popular? How does Poland compare to Europe? Check it out!
How many electric cars are on Polish roads?
Zero-emission cars have been gaining popularity around the world in recent years. Although there are so far far far fewer of them in Poland than in the regions that are leaders in this issue (e.g. Scandinavia), the situation is improving from year to year. The number of electric cars registered in Poland in the first quarter of 2022 increased by more than 50%.
How many electric cars are there in Poland? Electric vehicles currently account for more than 43,000 of all registered cars. However, not all of them are fully electric. The number of fully emission-free vehicles and plug-in hybrids is almost equal in this statistic. There are more than 21 000 of each type of car.
In addition to the 43 000 passenger cars, Poland is also developing a fleet of trucks, motorbikes and buses on electricity. So far, however, their number is negligible. Vans of various types amount to less than 2 000 vehicles. The situation is slightly better for single-track vehicles, i.e. motorbikes and scooters. There are almost 11 000 of these.
Although the dynamic development of electromobility is a fact, there is still much to be done. Compared to the number of combustion cars, the number of electric cars in Poland is still very small. The figure of 43,000 cars quoted here is a drop in the ocean when one considers that there are 30 million vehicles registered in Poland.
What brands of electric cars are most popular in Poland?
Sales of electric cars in Poland show that Polish customers are mainly interested in smaller vehicles. Among car manufacturers, you will find most of the well-known brands that make combustion vehicles in addition to electrics.
Currently, one of the most popular electric cars in Poland is the Nissan Leaf. Its popularity, which has been consistently high for several years, is due to a good price-performance ratio and the amount of space available in the passenger cabin. Prices of this model start at just under PLN 124,000. At this amount, the driver gets a spacious hatchback with a range of up to 270 km and a top speed of 144 km/h.
A big competitor for the Japanese company's car is the Renault Zoe. The price of this vehicle is close to the amount you have to pay for the Nissan Leaf. Again, this is a car in the hatchback category. It has a very good range of as much as 395 km/h. Its top speed, on the other hand, is 140 km/h.
Among the popular electric cars in Poland are not only hatchbacks. Škoda also has its piece of the pie with the Citigo-e iV. Due to its compact dimensions, the vehicle is an excellent choice for drivers who are primarily looking for a car for city driving. The interest in the Škoda Citigo-e iV is evidenced by the fact that its first deliveries were quickly sold out. For a price of around £80,000, you can have a vehicle with a range of 260 km and driving up to 130 km/h.
BMW is also popular. In addition to the more expensive cars, the concern also offers the i3 model priced at around £170,000. However, its purchase requires some compromises, especially when it comes to battery capacity. For this money, you can drive a car with a top speed of 150 km/h and a range of up to 200 km.
How does Poland compare to Europe in terms of electric cars?
Although the number of electric cars in Poland is small, Poland is not so far behind compared to other countries. In the entire European Union, 300 million cars are registered. The number of electrics, however, oscillates around barely 2 million.
Most of these 2 million electric cars were sold in countries with higher levels of wealth. In countries such as Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway, the number of electric cars ranges from 100,000 units in Scandinavia to 400,000 per year in Germany.
Electromobility in Poland is still only a fraction of the automotive market. The programme launched by the government to subsidise electric vehicles is not enough to have a significant impact on how many electric cars are bought in Poland. As long as the prices of electrics are not lower, the development of emission-free transport will not be as dynamic as it should be.
