How to save electricity at home on electrical appliances?
Saving electricity is a way of both living greener and saving on energy bills. Nowadays, many electrical appliances are used in homes and flats, which require a considerable amount of electricity to function. This begs the question: how do you save electricity at home? It is a good idea to start by checking the energy rating of the appliances in your home. The newer the appliances, the higher the likelihood that they will be classed close to A. If you have a lot of G-rated appliances in your home, it's worth thinking about replacing them. Check especially those appliances that you use the most - the TV, fridge or washing machine. If your old appliances break down, be sure to replace them with ones with a better energy class.
If you are using the oven, it is a good idea to switch it off a little earlier - e.g. 10 minutes before the end of baking. The temperature won't have time to drop yet, so the food will bake and the power consumption will be lower. On the cooker or hob, cook under lids, which allow less heat loss and faster heating. If you want to cook potatoes, for example, it is a good idea to cut them into small pieces so that they are soft and warm more quickly. Instead of using the cooker hood, you can open the window. Also limit the use of blenders when you can mash something with a fork, or the microwave. Don't overheat your food!
How can you save electricity when styling your hair? Instead of using a hair dryer, it is a good idea to wait for your hair to dry on its own. To reduce the use of curling irons, you can try heat-free ways to curl your hair, such as silk rollers, which are a healthier method for your hair. Straightening products or special hair treatments that change the hair's structure can help to avoid straightening. Other than that, remember the rules about eco-friendly washing in the bathroom. Only switch on the washing machine when its drum is full and wash on short or eco mode.
In addition, it is worth paying attention to the use of laptops or smartphones. Try to charge your devices only as much as they actually need and then remove the cables from the sockets. Conserve the energy of your devices by putting them into power-saving modes and using as few devices as possible at the same time. Always switch off appliances after you have finished using them. When you leave the house, it is a good idea to unplug cables or switch off power strips to which devices are plugged in. Reduce the brightness of screens and make sure they are not on at night.
How can you save money on electricity at home by switching electricity supplier?
You can also save electricity at home by changing your electricity supplier. If your electricity bills are high, be sure to compare the price per kWh at your supplier with others available on the market. Unfortunately, changing supplier involves a rather time-consuming process of switching from one contract to another, but if you save money on energy as a result, it may prove to be very worthwhile. It is worth remembering that in Poland there are several Distribution System Operators (e.g. Tauron or Energa), and under them there are sellers with whom one should settle accounts for the energy taken from the DSO. It is only possible to choose between sellers, as the operators invariably operate in specific regions of the country.
How can you save electricity at home with the right lighting?
How do you save on electricity through lighting measures? First of all, ensure that energy-efficient light bulbs are present throughout the house or flat. Once the light bulbs are installed, care should be taken to use them sensibly, i.e. always turning off the light when it is not necessary (e.g. during the day) and when you leave the room in question. It is advisable to have such chandeliers where there are several bulbs and you can decide how many of them should be lit. Light is a great convenience in the home, but it is worth being mindful of saving it.
If you are in the process of decorating your flat, pay attention to the colour of the walls. The lighter they are, the brighter the room will seem and for a good part of the day you won't need to switch on extra lighting. Use not only ceiling chandeliers in your interior design, but also set up bedside or desk lamps. They consume a little less electricity and you can only switch them on when you need temporary lighting in one place rather than the whole room.
Why save electricity at home?
You already know how to save on electricity in several different ways. It is worth considering why ways of saving electricity are so important. The first benefit of saving electricity is, of course, reduced bill costs. In modern construction, it is not uncommon to rely on ecological solutions, i.e. green or passive houses with low energy losses and the use of photovoltaics, for example. In addition, saving energy at home has a huge impact on the environment. In well-insulated and airtight houses, there will be a much lower need to burn the cooker, and this contributes, for example, to using less coal or other material with which you power your home heating system. When you know how you can save energy, you can contribute to less greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.
How to save electricity? Take care of the right temperature in your home. Don't open the windows whenever you are too hot, but adjust the temperature level so that it is optimally warm. The frequent use of air-conditioning or fans also contributes to wasting electricity. It is important to position appliances on electricity in the flat appropriately. For example, fridges or freezers should not be placed next to hot radiators. Nor should hot food be placed in them. And how can you save electricity at home when washing dishes? The best way is to switch on short washing programmes in the dishwasher, which uses less water than washing by hand. Remember that greater household awareness of how to save electricity in the home gives you the opportunity to make a bigger difference to your bills and make an impact on the climate crisis that has been signalled for years. Be guided by the good of the planet and your own!
