The airflow sensor is one of those car components that many people are not aware of. However, it is essential for dynamic and economical driving. Why is it so important? What should I clean the air mass sensor with? What symptoms indicate its failure? You will find the answers to these questions in the following article.
Airflow sensor - what is this device?
The air flow sensor, also known as a flow meter, is an internal combustion engine component located downstream of the air filter. It regulates the air flow, allowing the correct amount of fuel to be injected into the engine. In this way, it is supposed to bring the fuel ratio closer to the stoichiometric mixture (1 litre of fuel per 14.7 litres of air).
How does the airflow sensor work?
The airflow sensor is, in most cases, a relatively simple design. There are three types of them - flip-flop, mass and vortex.
Flapper airflow sensor
The function of this flow sensor is to swing the flap at an angle depending on the momentum of the air. The movement of the flap allows a potentiometer to operate, which transmits information about its position to the car's computer. This allows it to select the correct amount of fluid, which is then injected into the engine.
Mass flow sensor
The commonly used flip-flop flowmeters have, after many years, found competition in the form of a mass flow sensor. The principle of this component is based on the controlled heating of a wire made of platinum. The air temperature cools the airflow sensor. Ventilation is a signal to the car's electronics that more energy is required to maintain the temperature of the wire. This makes it possible to measure the air flow and determine the amount of fuel required.
Vortex airflow sensor
Vortex sensors use ultrasonic waves. A generator located in the intake manifold produces vibrations that are picked up by a microphone. Based on this, the amount of incoming air is transmitted to the car's computer to determine how much fuel the engine needs. This is the most complex and expensive airflow sensor. The industrial nature of production is therefore limited.
Use of airflow sensors
There are several simple ways to check the airflow sensor. If it is faulty, an incorrect reading will lead to excessive fuel consumption and a drop in engine power. It may also run unevenly. Also, acceleration problems indicate a faulty airflow sensor. Symptoms are a temporary lack of acceleration despite pressing the accelerator pedal.
How do I clean the airflow sensor so that it works properly? The best way to do this is by using dedicated preparations. It is important to remember not to use water. You should also change the filter regularly.
The airflow sensor is an inconspicuous, but extremely important engine component. Without it, economical driving would not be possible and any acceleration would be a thankless task. So remember to look after it as well as the air filter.
