The e-commerce market is growing rapidly. This causes a constant increase in the demand for courier services, thus offering a job to people who enjoy working in the field, contact with people and appreciate the diversity and dynamism of this profession. However, to take up the position of courier, there are a few things to keep in mind. How to prepare well for this role?
Courier jobs - do you need a degree?
When browsing through job adverts, you will come across a real plethora of offers relating to courier services. Nowadays, it is a profession that is very popular due to the ever-increasing interest in online shopping. To become a courier, you don't need to have a degree or any specialised authorisations, certificates.
Given that a courier's day-to-day tasks include transporting parcels, the most important aspect for acceptance into the position is the ability to drive. An active category B driving licence is therefore required. Employers often also pay attention to how long the employee has held this document.
What is required of a courier?
Typically, courier companies offer employees different forms of employment. The first proposal is for an employment contract and does not require the employee to have his or her own car - he or she is given the keys to one of the company cars and starts carrying out the tasks assigned to him or her.
The second option takes into account the employment of a person who is self-employed. In this case, the courier works as a carrier "on his own account" and the company charges him a salary based on the shipments delivered. It is the responsibility of the courier employed in this way to have his own car and to adapt it to the requirements of the company using his services.
The main duty of a courier is to transport a parcel from A to B. This is why every courier should be a good driver and have experience in driving vans. Knowledge of traffic regulations and the ability to drive efficiently around town are also essential. Some companies also require potential candidates to be familiar with the area in which they will be delivering.
It is worth remembering that the position of courier comes with responsibilities. First and foremost, it concerns the delivery of all parcels intact. Customers often choose the cash on delivery option. In this case, the courier must collect the amount due from the buyer and, at the end of the day, deliver it safely to the base.
What are the qualities of a good courier?
A person wishing to work as a courier should, above all, enjoy driving. In addition to this, it is important that a candidate for a job as a courier possesses some of the most useful qualities for the position, such as:
- resistance to stress,
- ability to work under time pressure,
- responsibility,
- dutifulness,
- good orientation in the area,
- physical fitness,
- communication skills,
- a positive attitude.
Every courier must be aware that his or her job is largely based on contact with the customer. Therefore, the person employed in this position should be communicative and open-minded. The work of a courier is characterised by great diversity - on a daily basis, he receives orders for routes with delivery to Paczkomat® machines, as well as door-to-door orders, i.e. delivery of a parcel to a specified address.
What does a courier's working day look like?
The courier's day begins in the early hours of the morning. This is when the check-in takes place, when the employees collect the parcels from the warehouse. Each carrier checks the parcels entrusted to him for any damage. Then all the packages are loaded into the vehicle. This is where logistics are important - they need to be arranged properly to fit and be properly protected. Once the car is loaded, the courier sets off on his route - each courier has his own working region and visits the same Paczkomat® InPost machines every day. This is an area of specific city districts or a larger revir. A good knowledge of the area is therefore essential. The main part of the courier's working day is delivering parcels to the Paczkomat machines and courier parcels personally to customers. After the parcels have been distributed, the courier returns to the warehouse to leave the parcels that have been posted at the Parcel Machines there.
