More and more electric vehicles can be seen on Polish streets and the base of public charging stations for 'electrics' is gradually expanding. An alternative to public points are home chargers. What is the price of a home charging station for electric cars and is such an investment worthwhile?
Electric car home charging station - price
The price of a home electric car charging station is within the range of several thousand PLN. It all depends on its power and charging speed, so for chargers for electric cars with relatively low power (single-phase charging 3.6-7.4 kW) you will pay around PLN 1,000, while models supplying 11-22 kW with three-phase power cost around PLN 3,000. In the case of stations that allow two cars to be powered at the same time or chargers with additional features, such as connection to a mobile app on a smartphone, the amount will be higher. It is also important to remember to add to the cost of purchasing a home electric car charger the price of its installation, which fluctuates between approximately PLN 1,000 and 2,500.
How do you create a home charging station for electric cars?
For the weakest electric car chargers, it is possible to plug them into a standard household socket. If you opt for a more powerful car charger, a three-phase power supply of 400 volts will be required. You will therefore need to find out whether the electrical installation in your home can cope with such a load or whether it will need to be modified. The installation of an EV charging station requires the selection of appropriate conductors and fuses and should therefore be carried out by an SEP-certified electrician. When the electrical installation is suitable for the safe installation of a home charging station of a given capacity, work can begin. The installation of the charger itself should take about two hours.
Is a home car charging station cost-effective?
How much does it cost to charge an electric car at home and is it cost-effective? The cost of such battery power varies depending on the electricity tariff chosen, the power of the device and the battery capacity of the car. The most popular G11 tariff averages PLN 0.77 per 1 kWh. It will be cheaper to charge under the G12 tariff, which assumes lower electricity prices during night hours or the connection of the station to a photovoltaic installation. In each case, these charges are lower than using fast public stations. For example, the cost of charging an electric car at Greenway stations ranges from PLN 1.36 to PLN 2.55 per kWh. What is more, this type of power supply lasts much less time than drawing electricity from a standard socket.
Charging an electrician at home is a worthwhile investment not only for financial reasons, but also because of the convenience it guarantees. Spending a few thousand zloty translates into the possibility of safely powering the batteries in the car without time constraints and at any time of the day.
