Electric cars in Poland - how many are on our roads and is it worth investing in them?
20 March 2022
Electric cars in Poland - subsidies for the purchase of modern models are tempting an increasing number of customers. Reliable in cities (and not only!) cars can increasingly be seen on Polish roads. In the article, we discuss how many "electrics" can be found in our country, whether the prices of electric cars in Poland are adequate to the maintenance costs of the vehicle and which models are the most popular.
Electric cars in Poland - how many are on our roads?
The number of electric cars in Poland is growing year on year. Environmentally friendly vehicles are increasingly chosen by consumers who care about efficiency, driving comfort and protecting the planet. How many electric cars were on the road in Poland in 2021? Research shows that the total number of passenger cars was 38 001, of which 18 795 were electric cars and 19 206 were hybrids. In addition, 1,657 electric commercial vehicles appeared on Polish roads; these were mostly delivery vehicles.
Electric cars vs. hybrids - which are Poles more likely to choose?
The available electric cars in Poland are electric cars and hybrids. Electric cars are those that only use an electric drive to drive and have to be recharged with electricity at home or at stations designed for this purpose. Alongside these are the equally popular hybrid models, i.e. those equipped with both an electric and a combustion engine. They can use them interchangeably or at the same time. The 2021 figures show that Poles are more likely to choose hybrids. However, these models have only a slight advantage over 'electrics'. Their number in 2021 was 19 206, while there were 18 795 purely electric cars in Poland.
Which brands of electric cars are the most popular in Poland?
Poland's first electric car is yet to be built. It will be the Izera, production of which is to start at a new factory in Jaworzno. The first vehicle will probably roll off the production line in 2024. As Polish electric cars do not yet exist, there are plenty of foreign vehicles on city streets. Here are the most popular electric cars in Poland:
- Nissan Leaf - a spacious compact, available in two engine versions, which can travel around 300 or around 400 kilometres on a single charge (depending on the variant chosen);
- BMW i3 - a small city car that will travel around 360 kilometres without needing to be recharged;
- Renault Zoe - this car used to be available primarily on lease, and today, when you can buy this model outright, it has become one of the more popular models on the market. It is capable of driving around 400 kilometres on a single charge;
- Škoda Citigo-e IV - a small 2020 vehicle that will travel 260 kilometres on a single charge. The cheapest electric car in Poland;
- Tesla Model S - this luxury model can travel up to 600 kilometres without recharging, also being by far the most expensive of the line-up.
Electric cars in Poland - cost-effectiveness and comparison with petrol cars
Subsidies for electric cars in Poland are making more and more users decide to buy these vehicles. Despite the rather high initial costs, it turns out that the investment in an "electric car" will certainly pay off. However, the basic issue is the vehicle's propulsion and charging capabilities. Although chargers for electric cars in Poland are not yet as popular as petrol stations, they can be found more and more often. "Electrics" can also be charged at home - but then the battery cells fill up much more slowly (unless we have an efficient charger at our disposal). Nevertheless, charging electric cars with electricity remains significantly cheaper compared to petrol or diesel. In addition, it is worth noting that electric and hybrid cars break down much less frequently - so maintenance costs are also lower. Subsidies for electric cars in Poland are an ideal opportunity to buy even the cheapest electric car and convince yourself of its advantages and savings that such a purchase brings.
Although the production of electric cars in Poland is in its infancy, their use is growing in popularity. You already know the most popular models and how cost-effective it is to buy your own "electric car". With just a few simple steps, you can contribute to the safety of the planet and increase your comfort!
